  1. So since I don't have weekends to do anything fun, but still wanted something to tinker with, I decided on a longer-term tidy up project. Loosely "tidy up", as it will likely take much sweat and blood and probably a bucket load of $$ to bring this unloved wagon back to some sort of respectability. I have a vague idea of how I want this to turnout, but initially it will be a matter of cleaning up, sanitising it and making sure it's road worthy.

Rough list of things which need addressing:

    • Exterior: peeling clear coat, few dents, few small rust spots
    • Interior: seats, door trims, roof lining, a really good clean
    • Engine seems healthy, although wanting to upgrade later down the line
    • Mechanical list of things pending WoF

    Wish me luck!

  2. I've had the same issue (as all AW11 owners do), and I ended up finding a semi-decent mk1b bumper iron to replace my mk1a.

Have a look at my old thread on the MR2OCNZ forums: https://mr2.org.nz/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=11518&p=101964#p101964

If your one can't be fixed, I wish you luck in finding a decent condition one to restore and conserve it. If you haven't already, it might be worth posting around MR2 forums to try and locate one...

  3. Hi guys,

Sadly, due to unavailability of time / loss of interest / other factors I've decided to put the project car up for sale.

It's a 1999 BMW 318Ti Compact, body has done around 270,000kms, M44B19 engine and manual gearbox (G220) have done around 150,000kms. Rego currently on hold, has current WOF.

    • 4.44 LSD differential out of a Z3, fitted using Powerflex bush
    • Stripped out, nearly ready for rollcage
    • LED Halos
    • Go-fast red mudflaps
    • Genuine-replica OMP pull-handle for the glove box
    • Comes with a bunch of spares:
      • 12x rims with street tyres and 4x rims with pretty good gravel rally tyres
      • 2x spare diffs - a welded 4.44 and an open 3.38
      • random assortment of other parts - engine mounts, OE front shocks, etc

I'm looking for $3500 ono with all spares, but happy to negotiate.

    Contact me via pm.

Build thread can be found here:

  4. Be careful using screws with a big head like that to lock the ignition barrel, I did the same thing and had issues because the wires on the ring were being shorted out. My memory is a little foggy as to what the symptoms were, but yeah... :)

Nice job restoring this thing, I like the fact that because it's not actually an M3 you can modify it without feeling bad ?

I am putting an engine back into where it should be maybe mid-March, but not sure, if any of you guys (well, c'mon whats the chances) have one sitting outside looking lonely, could I borrow it for a bit.  I am happy to collect it within a reasonable distance from West Auckland.

I am only taking an engine that is currently on an engine stand and putting it back, cast iron head and block and transmission

Text me please that would be awesome.

  6. Hi guys, one of my mates is selling his pride and joy:

It's a NZ NEW 2006 E60 550i M with full service history. Click on the link to find out more, but I pasted the blurb below:

    Quote

    NZ NEW

    Full service history

    Factory everything, including wheels

    HUD

    Cruise control

    Black leather & wood interior

    Genuine M-sport

    Sunroof-moonroof

    HID look-around headlights

Active Steering (light and quick in town, heavier and slower on the highway)

    LOGIC7 surround sound (sounds AMAZING)

articulated Comfort Seats with memory, adjustable every-which-way (both front seats)

    Drink cooler

    Flip-down rear seats
    Ski box/bag

Flip-down rear armrest with cupholders and a pass-through

    ISOFIX mount points

Westfalia removable towbar, 2000kg braked (not wired, but can be done for a few hundred dollars)

    Parking radar/sensors

    CD stacker

    Auto wipers

    Auto headlights

Widescreen iDrive CCC with NZ navigation maps

    Bluetooth (not working, sadly)

    Puddle lamps

Tyres have good amount of tread

12V power plugs front, middle and in the boot

    Tools

Space-saver spare wheel, NOT the uncomfortable and expensive run-flats!

    Owner's manual and service history

This is a genuinely gorgeous example of this car, and an utter dream to drive.

Excellent condition and meticulously maintained, preventatively as well. Looks and drives like a brand new car, has NOT been thrashed.

Transmission also serviced at 140,000kms with genuine fluid and new solenoids.

Surprisingly economical - with some careful driving I can get it down to 7L/100km on the journey from Albany to Warkworth.

Engine is the N62TUB48, updated from the 545i. Does not have the troublesome secondary air system, and valve seals are fine (no smoke at all).

Includes 2x original keys plus the odd-looking service key thing in the glovebox. Keys remember and automatically change seats, mirrors, radio etc. when unlocking the car.

Reason for selling is so we can buy something that can tow the boat, because our tow car (not this one!) is succumbing to wear and tear.

Please note I would be more than happy to take you for a drive, but would kindly ask for proof of purchasing ability before test driving yourself ? lots of odd things going on on Trademe these days!

Possibly mine before i got it, its Interlagos blue but my wife swears its purple and i have to concede it looks purpleish in the right light. I got it from a dealer in Mt Eden where it had been traded on a Landcruiser, which is much more sensible for school runs in Mt Eden!!

Purple or blue, the car had my head turning every single bloody time I saw it ? I love sleeper wagons ???

The M44 had an inherent rough idle issue which could be overcome in most instances by a  mod to camshaft timing. Have a look...just google : " E36 BMW M44 camshaft timing modification"

You were right Glenn, that's done it!

    Copy pasta from http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=21403

    Quote

VIBRATIONS AT IDLE SPEED. PARTICULARLY NOTICEABLE WHEN IN THE SEAT WITH THE VEHICLE STATIONARY. Its says its due to " differing levels of residual gasses in the individual cylinders at idling speeds. This effect occurs at irregular intervals with differing intensity. Retard the intake cam timing by 6 degrees (=12 degrees crankshaft) to 116 degrees crank angle. Changing the valve timing in this manner does not lead to any perceptible drop in torque or output"

Interestingly enough, when you take off the rocker cover it looks like only the exhaust camshaft is adjustable, but that's due to the camshaft sensor pickup wheel being installed on top of the intake camshaft sprocket - both camshafts can in fact be adjusted.

All in all it took about 30 minutes to do, and the car is SO much smoother when idling.

I'm still surprised that this is what it took, have all M44s came out of the factory with this issue?

  9. Haven't really done much to the car during winter, but finally got a chance to take it out and do some skids.

It was a wet day at the Motorkhana held by HCMC at Waikaraka Park, but it sure helped getting around those cones. The LSD really changed the way the car drives - so much more forward momentum than the locked diff, and getting it sideways and keeping it there was very predictable. 10/10

After the first 2 tests I was surprised to find that I was leading, but made a couple of mistakes on the 3rd course, and then the 4th course suited the faster cars, so ended up 7th overall, with 2nd in class (it's an M44, so it puts me in the 1800cc+ class). Very happy with result ?

Also it has had some resprays on odd panels like nosepanel, one of the front guards, a door, the mirrors, sideskirt, top part of the rear bumper etc. still a work in progress.

    Looking good Kyu!

Are you doing the resprays yourself?

Rego expired but rego is cheap as now will be about $50 to bring it up to date.

It's interesting that people still say things like this.

Rego becomes the new owners responsibility from the date of the ownership change going through. The invoice for money owing for the expired period up until date of ownership change will be sent to the previous owner.

    Just FYI.

GLWS, I'd probably consider purchasing this if I had room.

Thanks Glenn, I have read quite a few posts about this mod. It's an option, I was a bit iffy about doing anything to the timing due to the cars low mileage - surely it hasn't been like this from factory?

In a couple of weeks, once I've replaced the blower fan on my friends Mini and clutch on my sister's Corolla, I might attempt adjusting the timing. My 318ti has a similar feeling idle, but it's done 260kms and the idle doesn't bother me since it lives near the redline when it's being driven. Might experiment with this car first.

Haha, I had that guy at 'Chubb Racing' do a rear cage in my E36, my engineer friend at the time didn't really think much of the welds when I showed him.

Wasn't overly happy to find a couple of welds splatters had burnt holes into the glass and he also scratched the door sill when taking the drivers seat out, dragging the rails on it.

Hope he did a better job on your car!

This is the sort of stuff you normally should go back and discuss with the business who performed the job. Did you approach Ray about it?

I've seen several cars done by him and they're all done to a high standard.
