  1. There is basically no way to enable paid or subscription features without the required license codes. This is made even more difficult since BMW is moving to newer Coding 2 and Coding 3 principles for their modules. The software files for the modules will no longer be stored locally, instead being accessible only through a remote connection to BMWs servers.

    So, unless someone at BMW decides to leak those files we are SOL when it comes to coding modules.

    I wasn't sure that the charging time was correct, so I double checked with the fact sheet.

    iX Charging.pdf 208.28 kB · 9 downloads

    The 54 hour charging time is only when using the 3-pin contingency charger, which you would only really do if you were stuck somewhere away from home or a charging network. Using a wall-box charger on single phase you can get 7.4kw supplied to the car (just under 30 amps) which is a more realistic time - as tbh if you have an EV like this you need a home or office wallbox to charge from, without the need to add in 3-phase power.

    It is possible to open the bonnet, but this is intentionally restricted as you don't really want people poking around in a high voltage area if they don't know what they are doing.

    100% on this. There is no reason for the end-user to be poking around under the bonnet. Though it can be opened, it's not recommended.

    As for charging, absolutely need to have at least a 32a plug installed since charging through regular 3-pin would be pointless. BMW for the moment are supplying the iX with a wallbox, portable charger and a type 2 cable.

    Hi Hugo, thanks for your input. Below is what I am seeing, perhaps you can shed some light.

    It has the 5 tiles on the home screen so I think it is NBT EVO ID5. You could be right regarding the hardware, I have seen one un-commanded reboot while driving, so perhaps it is just the software that has been updated. I haven't pulled the head unit from the dash to check the hardware version number though.

    It has wireless Carplay, and I can mirror my Android phone's display to there must be a wifi antenna installed, I think as a retrofit.

    It does look to have the NZ maps installed. - Excuse the amount of photos and camera glare.

    I have been into the sort of  hidden Navigation *Service Menu* and there are definitely some things that are not as they should be;

    The Sensor Test shows the GPS Status as reserved

    20220419_114506.thumb.jpg.c3be51734576a72229606b0965f5ca46.jpg

    As does the GPS Status, there appear to be no visible satellites, and no almanac data.

    20220419_114409.thumb.jpg.f34997b2eceb87d6fea891e9a500ab73.jpg

    The GPS Version menu is showing no Receiver SW version or date.

    20220419_114351.thumb.jpg.185e02cf934544178329e57daba2e9e5.jpg

    When you do go into the Maps it logs the current vehicle position as Null Island - 0 degrees latitude and 0 degrees longitude.

    20220419_115238.thumb.jpg.9148d93165cbe2023aef6fb513e966e4.jpg

    But if you manually navigate the interactive map to NZ, there is data there as you'd expect.

    20220419_115413.thumb.jpg.59b5612dec453a5cc2284a1ec08ad911.jpg

    There are saved NZ addresses in the system so I am guessing it has worked at some point.

    My knowledge of all this is a bit lacking, my experience with BMW Nav and coding ends with the Mk IV Nav system in the E39 and Jochen Siegenthaler's NavCoder software 10 years ago!

    So I think it could be - I'd love to be corrected!

    1. Bad GPS Antenna
    2. Bad GPS Reciever
    3. Bad cable/connection between the above 2
    4. Something has been changed (ID5 upgrade?) and subsequently not coded correctly

    I'll pick up a replacement GPS antenna and start there, otherwise its go and and pick up an ENET cable and try to learn ESYS and evrything else that has been developed in the last 10 years. Or perhaps just knuckle under and take it to an expert in town!

    Ah right. So I had similar issues with my 6-er when I replaced CIC idrive with NBT. It could be that this was a hardware swap to NBT Evo and the antenna was not connected to the correct port on the head unit. I recall that on CIC cars the swap to EVO would require new antenna amps etc, but for EVO to ID5 the swap whould be straight forward. It could also be a coding issue on the head unit.

    Maybe reach out to the guys at AutoGravity and ask them to run a diagnostic. They are very knowledgable on the topic.

  4. Based on the production date from the VIN it should be equipped with iDrive NBT-EVO ID4 (which as the regular text based menu). If yours has the tile based menu then it has been upgraded. Retrofits from ID4 to ID5 could be done on some units without hardware changes but the Hardware suffered as a result since the ID4 units have less RAM than the ID5/6 units, resulting in frequent reboots.

    You can check which maps database is installed from the Navigation Settings menus. If it's still on the UK maps then a simple map update should do the trick. You should also be able to tell the raw position from one of the Nav settings screens which will tell you if the GPS is functional.

  5. So BMW, Porsche and VW are all shutting down production in coming days due to supply constraints of wiring harnesses sourced from Ukraine. Incredible how far reaching Putin's was actually is.

    It does feel like I have all the car gods on my side though. My car has completed production and been handed over to carrier for shipping (status 182) well ahead of the original production date of 9/3/22.

    It is a beaver isn’t it, I just don’t think a ‘kidney’ grill can translate to something that large. Unlike a Audi or Lexus, the kidneys are all out of proportion.

    Does the iX need a large grill, I’d say yes for styling, just the kidneys are a struggle on this and most new BMWs unfortunately

    There’s a fair bit of technology behind the grille area, and size wise its about 1/3 narrower than the x5 grille while being only around 1/3 taller.

    wow, i thought we were over the trend of making dash displays look like an afterthought tacked on last minute. Clearly not...

    Those seats look comfy though.

    Not even close. Many of the LCI models are getting the same display setup. At least 3, 4, X5 and 7 series have been confirmed or spied with the new setup.

    And yep, the seats are incredibly comfortable.

    Ah yes, the infamous stratification wheel, its caught me out before, sadly though in this case I had it set to Hot already.

    I agree the Heater Valve is probably the issue, but Water Pump is more a scheduled maintenance concern!

    Are you going to do the work yourself? Looking at the workshop manuals I am surprised at how easy the three water pumps are to replace, considering how tightly packed the engine bay is.

    Aka the 2009 F02 760Li.   Its great, but I just had a poke around the engine bay... man these things are crammed and alien looking! I can see some minor weepy plastics and lines for the cooling system but I cannot see:

    - MAFs ( I change these on every car I buy thats like 100k+ km)

    - Aux Pump (interior vents dont blow hot air..)

    - Water Pump

    - 3rd water pump, for turbos

    Man it goes though, such a fantastic car to drive and be in.

    20220201_164247.jpg

    Brave man! Might be totally obvious but have you checked the stratification wheel on the climate vents to test for warm air? Also, if it's not been diagnosed as the water pump it may well be the water valve (no.5 in the image) that's stuck. Either way, neither are super major jobs. Instructions attached :D

  11. So today was the day. My iX build order is in and confirmed as BMW New Zealand order number 32! Currently looking at a May/June delivery. Pretty excited, not going to lie! My order specs are below:

    * Xdrive 40 MSport
    * Mineral White Metallic (A96)
    * 22" Aerodynamic wheels 1020 Bicolour 3D (1LD)
    * Amido Black Leather Interior (SCHA)
    * ENHANCEMENT PACKAGE
       - Sky Lounge Panorama Roof (407)
       - Soft Close Doors (323)
       - Laser Lights (5AZ)
    * Active Ventilated Seats (453)

    I had the option to forward purchase a dealer demonstrator but that car has the crystal interior appliques which I really don't like and lacks ventilated seats. I figured I'd be better served just ordering the spec I want. A few pics from the configurator are attached.

    I'm just confused at what spec this car is, is it one of BMWs new economy electric cars? Looking at the design it seems like they are going for a lower cost minimalist approach to make them cheaper for the mass market, are they more affordable than previous electric models?

    It’s the iX which will be BMWs technology flagship for the next while. It does have a minimalist design approach inside yes but material quality is better than the 7-series and it’s priced to match, starting at $163900 for the xdrive40 model. Size wise its comparable to the x5 (a little longer, slightly narrower). The old i3 has nothing on this.
