  1. Next question:
I was just going to drain fluid, take pan off, change filter, clean magnets and put pan back on then fill back up.
But perhaps I was thinking of doing a proper flush.
What's the best process for a full flush?

I've been told I could just have the car in drive and engine running, fill through the side fill hole and drain out the bottom until the fluid out the bottom runs clean.
I'm not sure how the new fluid wouldn't just drain straight out the bottom though....?

  2. Hi all

I have a Jap imoort 2008 323i E90 with the GM trans and I would like to change the fluid.

I have read a lot of conflicting advice on what fluid to use, DEX VI, DEX III, even the supercheap site say to use DEX III.

Should I bother sourcing a Penrite/Valvoline alternative or should I just buy the stuff from BMW? I was assuming that buying OEM from BMW would be crazy expensive?

    @cat007 yup,

even @Jacko is living on the wild side right now with some Amazon Vanos solenoids in his 330 with no troubles.

    Nice. Thanks!

Apparently there are a few different versions with different sized holes in the end etc and there's very few, if any, that mention the 323. I'm assuming that the N52 and their solenoids are the same across? So that link you sent which says " for 128i 135i 328i 335i 525i X3 Z4 N51 N52 N54 3.0L "  should be ok for a 323i N52?

@cat007 my 325i (130,000) was showing some very subtle idle issues, every now and then low power at low RPM's, and it eventually threw a CEL every 1,000-3,000km

Petrol mileage was really poor like 12l/100km

Took out the vanos solenoids, cleaned them, checked resistances (which were within specifications) hard to say whether any improvement.

Anyway long story short, I swapped out some known working vanos solenoids in there, and my fuel mileage is back to averaging 9l/100km (mixed usage) 7-8l/100 open road, no strange idling issues, noticeable continual power restoration.

So i guess the solenoids were to blame and tracking it at times was elusive, cleaning them didn't really rectify the performance issues.

It might be worth your while grabbing a set of these off amazon since they are cheap, to try your luck to see if anything changes (they may last, they may not, a few members on here have purchased sets like that with no issues)

Thanks for the advice mate. Yeah - I might try and replace them. Not keen on those Amazon ones - their reviews are pretty awful and appear to fail a lot. Will look around for ones with better reviews.

  5. Hi all,

    2008 323i E90 with 70k's on the clock.
I can't see in the service records if the plugs have ever been changed as it's a Jap import and it's all in japanese so I thought I'd throw some new plugs in for good measure.
I was having a small amount of surging at very low RPM when I take off and have cleaned the VANOS solenoids, which appear to be operating ok.

I also have pretty bad fuel efficiency - 12L/100km with there being a lot of peak out Auckland traffic on motorways being where it's mostly used.

Is there much to tell from these? I thought #6 looks like it's had a lot of mis-fires?

    Cheers!

  6. Hi all,

I have an issue that has popped up randomly in the past 2 weeks.
I will be driving along normally, on a reasonably flat road, and the low oil light will come on. When I pull over to check the oil, it says it's low and to add 1L.

After another 2 or so minutes of driving I check again, and it's full. And ever since then, it is showing as full still. I'm not burning/using/dropping oil, so I don't believe it to actually be low.

Is the oil level sensor something that is a common fault on these?

    Cheers

  7. Hi all,

I have just bought a 2008 323i E90 and have had an aftermarket stereo installed.
The PDC sensors work well and the screen shows where the obstacle is around the vehicle, however the beeps only come from the small center speaker above my drivers feet.

Are the beeps supposed to come from the speaker closest to where the obstacle is? i.e. if something is at the rear left of the car, the beeps will come from the rear left?

    Cheers

  8. Hi all.

Just wondering if there's a repository for fluid specs required? I can't seem to find one and there are a lot of conflicting info.

I have a 2008 323i E90 auto and wanting to know what engine oil I should use, and the capacity.

  9. Hi all.

I'm looking at buying a 3 series E90 and some have the iDrive system and some do not.

They are Japan imports so the iDrive ones have Japan maps for the nav and the reset of the system is in Japanese and the radio of course is in the wrong frequency.

My question is, is there a bolt in replacement system that works for RHD E90's that has Bluetooth, Navigation and any other controls the iDrive normally has? Also must integrate with the steering wheel controls and any other systems the original Japanese system did.

I have seen things like this:
    https://www.seicane.com/android-bmw-e90-3-serie-saloon-cabeca-unidade-dvd-player-gps-sistema-de-navegac-o-com-3g-wifi-radio-bluetooth-sia-9203

But they seem pretty pricey and I'm no 100% if they work with Japanese imports?

    Cheers!
