its a cartridge type filter. If i put a screw driver though it.. I'd need to buy a new housing.

Trying to service my e36 316i and the oil filter housing (plastic top) is stupidly tight. It does not feature the "nut" on top and I cant get it off! I have tried a claw type filter remover (don't want to be to rough with this as it slips, scratches and don't want to crack the housing) and have tried a strap tool, but the filter housing lid is to short and the strap slips off. Also managed to rip another strap.... apart from forking out $200 for a set of oil filter cups is there anything else I can do? or can I buy an individual cup from somewhere? Cheers Andrew

Hey guys, Was driving around today, a little less cruisy then usual but not thrashing it by anymeans. (was just in a rush, no speeding) My ABS light came on as it sometimes does, Was told its a common problem with the gel pack? and my ODO disappeared, no kms or trip meter etc. I got to the engineer shop and was inside for about.. 5mins? Came back outside and started my car and the ODO came back up and ABS light off but my temp gauge jumped to about 3/4 but was waving around a little, check and my radiator looked full, no leaks. Fan was on so turned my heater on full and went for drive to get some air through the radiator and it went back to normal. My heaters didn't even blow hot at all though. I drove about 15mins home in medium traffic and didnt over heat again. so poll; did it actually over heat or was it the electrics just playing up? Little worried.

Hey guys, I have a mighty 316i and just over 2 years ago the radiator split right down the side tank. We had it replaced at the cost of $1000 and all was well in the world. I had it on the hoist last week for a pre wof check and noticed coolant on the guard underneath. I had seen this before but thought I'd check back at a later date. Then this morning I went outside and noticed a little damp spot on the drive way right under where I had discovered the coolant leak. So looks like I'm in for another new Radiator. So what are my options? I want an after market one due to the issue with BMW ones. I know my car is only a 316i and I don't work it very hard but is there a alloy version or something to that degree? It's getting higher up in the Km's but we have owned it for 8 years and I can't see selling it in the near future. I was how ever considering a turbo swap, so would like some future proofing. Cheers Andrew

so you would need a pair of each? pair for the front and pair for the back?

make sure when you hit it with a hammer, you have another hammer held against it on the other side!

I went to leave home yesterday and as I let my hand brake down I felt it go funny. I had a look and the hand brake button was stuck in. I pulled the grip off and pulled at the button and it came back out. tested once, worked ok, tested twice and it played up again. The hand brake still works.. it just wont hold. I came out to the car this morning and the button had shot right out. I removed it and a rod with a hook, a spring and a gromet all came out with it. Is it poked? Or can I refit it? I'm thinking whatever the hook hooks into has probably broken also had my car on the hoist yesterday, There was a few drops of green at the bottom of my radiator. Coolant was a little low, and I havent checked it in over a year (since BMW replaced the radiator) Any way to pressure test it? We didn't have a cap that would fit on where I had it. Also not to keen to stick a whole lot of compressed air down it..

thanks mark, will do -
I had a similar problem on my ute. the carb would drip at idle, and at high speed would backfire non stop. I pulled the carb off, pulled it to bits. cleaned it all out and it help with nothing! probably made it worse.. In the end i just got a replacement for $60 odd. Unless you want to spend $300 or so getting it rebuilt. I suggest getting a replacement with a guarantee and save some hassle. Or if you want to DIY it and have some peace of mind knowing your carb is mint, Ripco sell rebuild kits but are quite pricey

1. Sometimes my heater controls don't work. This means pushing my A/C button does nothing, pushing my rear window de/mister does nothing etc.. It usually seems to be on a cold morning.. Any suggestions? Sometimes it will eventually start working. Sometimes the car needs to be turned off and on 2. my LH rear speaker sometimes vibrates and sounds horrid! Sometimes quietly and sometimes quite loud, it doesn't seem to be ripped or perished. It's a Sony speaker, came in the car when we bought it 8 years or so ago. 3. ABS light sometimes come on, oddly you seem to be able to trigger it my trying to the wind the drivers window up when its already up as far as it can do. I have been told its a damaged wire in a gel pack, my tutor says he fixes these so might have to ask him. I've been told its a common problem so just wandering if there is a common fix before I hassle him! I took it to a BMW specialist in Mount Maunganui and they couldn't work out the heater issue (worked fine for them) They also seem to have damaged some clips on my 2 front door cards so now they rattle a wee bit too and can easily be pulled away from the door.. car is a e36 316i 1996. Any help would be great! thanks

thanks for that

cheers man top info, exactly what i was after! anymore common bushes etc to go?? can i get that stuff just through ripco? would make things easier haha whats a compete set of bushes cost for under a bmw? i know full nolathanes for old mazda is around $300, just no idea on bmw :D/ also are shocks through the different e36's interchangerable? eg 323i shocks, which i assume are abit more stiffer, into a 316i? my brother has a mtech 323i which handles infinatly better, even on 18s
-
oh also considering lowering my bmw. sugestions? do i need to shorten shocks, im running smaller mtech rims.
-
ive noticed lately that my beasty 316i sedan has started to creak over speed bumps and has abit of body roll. So think a few bushes might need replacing, maybe shocks. any suggestions on brands or types?
