  1. I had a problem similar to you, where it was a leak in the coldair intake system....hoodaki-thingy... (basically a big split in the ducting) which mucked around with the oxygen/fuel mix. I lost power intermittently. Meantime I have been lazy and duct taped it up. The symptoms have stopped since many 100s of kms ago.......'hope my 2cents can make a difference' good luck!

  2. Hi. I am wanting to buy an E39. I currently have a tidy, 93' E36 325i coupe. A South Island purchase would be more attractive. I live in Otago, but can travel anywhere in the S.I. for the right machine. My price range is up to 5k. Anything considered. Thanks in advance. Vanossa (021471606)

  3. I think the post refers to the turn signal indicator lamp in the dash - the one that blinks in synch with the turn signals which are working outside the car.

Yeah, sorry for the confusion. I do refer to the Turn Signal Indicator lamp on the dash.

just replace the bulb in the dash

    easy enough job

    Cheers Brent and everyone.

  5. Hi. 93' E36 325i Coupe (euro build/import), just recently failed the WOF for the dash indicator display being faulty. This was missed on previous WOFs and I have noticed it being faulty for about a year or so...? The external front and back indicator lights all work, but for the dash display on the left? Is this an 'easy fix' ? Anybody else had this before?...Thanks in advance.

  6. I just bought a Galaxy Note, which is waiting to clear customs (couriered via Hong Kong) and will be my first

Android. My first 'Smart Device' was a 3GS then the 4. I'm feeling adventurous/nervous as my Laptop is Mac Book Pro, but I have blind faith in my ignorance - as - it's a smart phone, it will work it all out......right? ps... I loved the iphone but for my work the Note will open up more opportunities and I have been learning of the better synching functions (apps etc...) between Apple and Android products to make this transition easier. Horses for courses or gambles for shambles? I'm excited about a change.

  7. Thanks guys I'll add that one to the list. Will update on the spark plugs check after Saturday's WOF....

Passed the WOF :) Seems like it may be the split (air filter housing pipe to throttle body) which I have tape/sealed as a temporary measure, until I source a replacement. A wee bit of oil was observed in one of the spark plug holes, also. So these are the leading causes of the symptoms now. I'll update again if any of the symptoms return post replacement of above.

  8. Thanks mate. I had it scanned today and nothing came up re: vanos. Would a scan show something about the vanos? It was a genuine scan tool this time. I have been holding my cards close to my chest and did not mention  engine problems to the mechanic who scanned it. The fact that nothing of importance was discovered now leads me towards the dirty spark plug theory? Surely some fault code would appear for either vanos or spark-plugs though?

  9. Hi All. I have been having some probs with my engine recently. After having it scanned today it came away without any current fault codes detected. It did have an 'Historic' fault code re: o2 sensor, but this was of little concern to the mechanics. Do these scans carry much weight? I already have some good suggestions for possible solutions re: the engine problems, but just wanted some opinion regarding the scan result. It was a genuine scanner tool and I would have thought it would detect something amiss relating to symptoms I have been experiencing?

  10. I got it on a genuine scanner today (Hansons Auto Services) and no fault codes were observed at time of scan, except an 'historical' one relating to 02 sensor. I explained the symptoms I've experienced above (post scan) and he is suggesting faulty spark plugs as a possible cause too. Paul e36 mentioned the Vanos seals, which I was leaning towards, but I'll update once I go back to my mechanic for the WOF and plugs check....Hope it's just something simple like new sparkies

  11. Hi Everyone. The car is running beautifully but for this.... There is a sudden loss of power in the engine. I commute on the open road daily and it can happen at any location i.e. hills, straights, bends. This has happened more frequently (3 times in last month?) but has happened once or twice only, as long as 6-8 months ago. When i shut down and start up again it seems to correct. The symptoms include, obvious loss of engine power and timing is out at idle. No signals or checks displayed in OBC or 'check' light on dash. Any ideas, anyone? This has always (so far?) happened once the car is underway on the open road. Thanks in advance. PS... I have had it on a scanner

(albeit after market) at a mechanic in Queenstown with no faults discovered. I live in Kingston (a one garage town)

    1993' auto, E36 coupe, 155000 miles.

  13. Hi All. As per my topic in the general subject page. I would like to purchase some brake pads that won't cause a rattle in the future. Could someone please point me to some parts for this problem. I am in Queenstown Otago and have no stealership in the area (you'd think someone would service the market in this area what with all the peop$e that drive BMWs). My car is 1993' E36 325i Coupe (english assembled). Thanks in advance.

  14. Thanks so far guys. All the replies make sense. I will get my local mechanic to check the discs, calliper brackets and rotors etc...and that they are the correct size. I have my (local mechanic) warrant due in Feb. Do you think it is ok to continue driving her till then. I'd be motivated to have it seen to immediately if it was a safety issue or a wear and tear problem, with the potential to cause a big mess in the near future, but it drives as it should and has been like this for 6 months or more. Hope this does not sound too stupid. Cheers.

  15. Hi there. I have located the rattle......When I drive (in particular) over the same bridge every day on my way to and from work, I can hear the rattle from the back end. I have looked under the body to find nothing suspect, e.g. loose muffler bracket or similar. However when I apply the brakes (under gentle acceleration) the rattle stops. So is it a brake caliper (thingy-somesuch) or something to do with the brakes? They are in absolutely perfect working condition. I Have recently warranted this car (post rattle).

  16. Hey guys. I'm going to look at an e36, 323i this evening and were hoping you guys could tell me anything to look out for, when checking it out. cheers

I bought a 95' at about 170k. When I sold it at 230k, it still had the same degree of 'jerk' in the shift between 1st&2nd, so it never got worse. This was something I learned to 'drive' around and when it did occur the car was usually (but not) always in a cold state. It never really bothered me too much. I would have been happy to keep it as the overall performance was more than satisfactory, but I bought a classic Holden (with some 'jerks' of its own) Even as a Jap import, I would rate this car well. The next Beemer was going to be an e36 323i, but for the great deal I found on my current. Hope this helps a wee bit.........Oh! and I recommend the 325i Coupe too..ha!

  17. maybe its time to replace your thermostat so the engine comes up to temp quickly overwise its running on choke etc.

also check the other things i mentioned .

8.6l per 100km is pretty good for one of those.

i normally get around 11.5 to 12l per 100km for around use etc

but can do around 8-9l per 100km on a trip

Ok. I think that is a good 'cheap start' to replace the thermostat. Also I will check the other things mentioned. Yes I have been proud of the L/km and that is why it 'horrifies' me to be using so much more. It may take a while for me to work through the above maintenance, but I will check back with the results asap. Thank you.
