Evening All,
Am looking for a wagon for my next car (have been carless for about 9 months now).
Think i have narrowed it down to either an audi a4, vw passat or mazda 6 (2.3ltr version).
Looking to spend roughly 12k max, but am leaning towards the passat at this stage for most bang for buck.
Want an engine size of 2.3 or larger, car will either be black or gunmetal grey, manual preferred but that wil be slim pickings with a euro.
If anyone has anything good or bad to say about any of the above, or peoples opinions on what would be a better buy it would be much appreciated.
Really need to get onto one before Christmas other wise the Xmas holidays will be spend travelling in a beat up 91 corolla.
Cheers,

And the figures from the dyno are?

Give me better info and I'll price it from here. At that price it must be a water cooled alternator for a 540 ??
Yes Glenn, its a water cooled unit. Apparently BMW do not make this part anymore, you can only get a BOSCH part which is a beefier/better version of the original.
The guy doing the work is reputable and i've told him im just going to have a hunt for a price.
Westy - alternator is poked, hes taken it right out and its not a simple case of replaceing the bushes. Happened to me over New Years, battery light started flickering then stayed on, then she died on me (over a 2 hour period)as i was doing 100kph around a corner. Rather odd feeling when the car starts jerking about at that speed. Initially i thought the battery was a goner becasue i had had some problems with it in the past.
Camera Doctor - I would rather new.
Cheers for the replies so far.

I need a new alternator for my e39 (facelift).
Have been quoted $1170 + GST from the local stealers and about $90 cheaper than that from a local auto electrician.
What are my options in purchasing it cheaper without the stealer markup, importing my own parts is out of the question unless i could get it here by middle of next week.
Any help would be appreciated.
If Christmas and New Year werent expensive enough already.....
Cheers,
Hamish

Hate to say it ... but every other modern car on the raod suffers from the same sh*t.
Just a sign of the times.
Don't I know it, our 5 hour drive to Raglan took 11 hours on the 28th Dec (the only day it decided to piss down) due to my alternator shitting itself.

3min 20sec, ridiculous.

Seen some Chinese copies on eBay, never anything by the major die cast model makers though.
Yeah had a quick browse on Ebay but would rather a good quality one.

Long shot, but does anyone know an importer of BMW die-cast motorbikes?
In particular a 2004/5 K1200s in indigo blue?
Am trying to get one for the old man to match his actual bike but am finding it difficult. Our local importer cannot find any of these between his 4 main importers.
Any help would be appreciated.

Very similar to my old mans car if not the same one, however his did go to Hamilton. 50ks on the clock when he sold it and i think he only got 45k for his not even a year ago. Mint cars with plenty of tow for passing.
I would definatly recommend it for a new purchase.

bump $100
Is this still for sale?
Also what is the diameter of the wheel?

So how would the car arrive? If you're keeping the 17's and you sold the weaves...Would the new owner have to supply wheels.
Price isnt too shabby either, everyday since i sold my m325i i wish i hadnt.
May be interested if my cars sells.

Haha yes I'd love a 540i. I'm actually opting for the 530i because I'm only 18 and I don't want to be paying a monumental NAC premium. So yes, it comes down to insurance.
Have you had a quote of a 540i vs a 530i?
I wouldnt think they would differ greatly to be honest.

NZ New BMW 540i Motorsport. Have a list of owners, about the 4th I think with a few dealers in the mix.
Factory fitted motorsport optioned 540i. This includes, staggered 17" alloy wheels, suspension, bodykit, interior trim, brakes and sport seats.
The car will be sold with a brand new warrant of fitness, two near new rear tyres (toyo proxes T1R's).
Car has just had all four brake pads and sensors replaced.
Car has a wicked sound system for factory, a built in TV that is tuned for NZ programs and a car phone.
Cons are as follows, a few scrapes etc around the body from people who cant park, minor curbing (previous owner)and the bracket holding the car phone is broken (hopefully i can get this fixed before the sale).
Any questions flick me a pm or post up a question.
Looking for $23,000.00 ono. Refer trademe for photos.

nice, looks very similar to mine. Very easy to misbehave with DSC off. Open diff is still a kill joy though. Is it full M-package with seats, suspension etc?
mind PM'ing me what you paid, and milage, age etc?
Me too, if you wouldn't mind.

It looks like the model that should be between the e39 and the e60.

Morning,
I have been asked whether or not my car (e39 540i) would be capable of towing a race car, approx 2 tonne regularly.
Questions being, what is the maximum towing capacity of my car? Has anyone done a lot of towing in this range using a 540i? and What was it like as a tow vehicle?
Your comments would be much appreciated.

Obviously your life is run of the mill, it just ticks over from day to day.... you don't need a watch let alone a calendar, the worst that's happened to you is that your hobby car needed a service, you have no goals to achieve each year, you live a blob of a life, if that's how you want it, that's cool, just some of us are aiming somewhere, we see each year as a stepping stone to our goal, we wager our efforts, some years we see sh*t others are f**king awesome..... I must say these last few years have been PURE sh*t.
Thats a lot of meaning to take out of a 1 line sentence and a little harsh on your part towards tony. I think he meant that you shouldnt measure things in such big doses e.g. why a whole year?
Glass is always half full, every day above ground is fantastic!

Thanks for all of the info. Seems a bit like daylight robbery if you're just buying stuff for yourself.
Have just got to do some figures and work out if it is still cheaper, pretty sure it will be.

Cheers fr the comments thus far.
Yes, i do mean the 1st gen Mazda 6. The only issue i have with the Mazda 6 is that they are everywhere, whereas the passat is a little less common.
What is the quality like between the Mazda and the Audi/Passat?
Plans for the car are tints, black wheels and possibly lowered so it wont look like the standard car (bit dubious on the Passats looks in standard trim).
