BMW trans fluid change

Today I decided to change my trans fluid as I have been having problems and wanted to eliminate that as the cause.

After making a few phone calls and talking to a mechanic, I was set to start.

I started by draining out the old fluid using the lower of the two plugs on side of trans (one is on each side)

I was told by the mechanic that if I have an under-bonnet filler (wich I do) that I fill it from there.

Here is the problem:

When I dropped the fluid out (roughly 3L) the under-bonnet filler with the dipstick was still as full as before I started. The fluid in there is also a brown color, the fluid I dropped out was red...

I didnt replace the filters or take off the small sump as I had this done professionally a few months back.

Why would the fluid level not have moved? I tried driving it, tried moving through the gears heaps of times, still nothing.

Any feedback would be great

Umm, I don't think its such a great idea to drive it without 3 litres of fluid.

I presume your talking about an auto trans?

When you change ATF (auto trans fluid) you usually only take out a quarter to a third of the fluid. The rest remains in the torque converter.

I'm not absolutely sure, but the dipstick might site somewhere near there.

How was the level on the dipstick before the drain?

Id say that the colour on the dipstick just seemed different.

I definitely wouldn't drive it again until you have topped up the fluid!

BTW, I'd use a good quality ATF like Penrite, Redline, or Amsoil. If you love your car, that is.
