7 pin / 8 pin problem

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Have a 1989 535i at the mechanics atm, I bought a replacement transmission from a later E34 535i, but am now told they can't be swapped over?

Apparently my transmission was 7 pin, and the new one is 8 pin, and now they're asking for another transmission. I'm moving up north in a week, so need it fixed yesterday.

Is there some solution to this or do I have a nightmare on my hands?

Cheers

Jono

Internet hopefully saved the day.

The electronics/valvebody/oil pan between the early 4HP22 and late 4HP22 are interchangeable.

I took some photos down to the mechanic, and he agreed, and he's going to do the swap. Hopefully we wont find any complications.

If anybody has a working torque converter from a 535 or 735, I'd like to hear from you. Local place wont sell me one without a gearbox attached to it. My torque conv. has been sent to a specialist, to be opened up, so it might be cheap or expensive or impossible to fix, dont know yet, but it'll be cheaper to replace than to do anything with the old one.

Reason the torque converter needs replacing is because my radiator managed to mix ATF and Coolant, and the torque converter is full of milky fluid

God I hate this car.

Cant blame the car for shoddy maintenance.Sounds like the trans cooler has corroded and let coolant into the trans.Thats why you need to ensure coolant is changed regularly.Auto trans problems arent unheard of in high mileage cars tho.Hope it all works out.

Thanks for the good luck.

This car has definately had low maintenance. Will fix it up and sell it on.

Am on my way soon to test drive a much nicer 5 speed 535i.

lol

f**king awesome

after all that

THE NEW GEARBOX DOESN'T WORK

no park, no reverse, but it goes forward now!

f**king awesome!!

So now I have to buy ANOTHER gearbox, it's proving to be a rather expensive hobby this collecting 'good condition' gearfboxes.

So after $850 + what I paid for the gearbox, now I have to drive Useless up to Hamilton without reverse only so I can spend even more money on a car I intended to sell, and the fuel guage still doesn't work properly grrrr

*rant over*

Anyone from Hamilton/Auckland have a 4HP22 from a 1988 or 1989 535i for sale by any chance?
