1N STYL 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2004 (edited) I was just wondering if anyone knew the spec's of a 1996 325 M-SPORT Coupe. and whats the differance between a Vanos motor and a normal one, if any? and where could i pick up a manual for it? (in Auckland) Thanks -Andrew- Edited May 1, 2004 by 1N STYL
Guest Spargo Report post Posted May 2, 2004 Weclome to the site! VANOS is (infinitely) variable valve timing, and seeing as you have a 96, both intake and exhaust cams have vanos. The manual swap on an E36 is far too complex, and a waste of time, you'd bettter finding a car that came with a manual.
1N STYL 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 Thanks...I meant an owners manual sorry.
gmccormack 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 VANOS - BMW trying to copy Honda V-TEC ,only not as good. The knives will be out for me
1N STYL 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 (edited) MAZ-DUH had that technology before honda OK so a VANOS should be faster than a normal one...or are they all Vanos...and how much faster? If you can't tell my car was an impulse buy... i know sh*t all about it Edited May 2, 2004 by 1N STYL
Dnz 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 (edited) ahhh WHY do people say things they dont understand? Vanos is NOT VTEC for bmw's. Maybe i-vtec..slightly, but NOT VTEC VTEC - Variable timing based on camshaft changeover at higher revs, effectively allowing a car with good city driving and fuel economy, as well as a 'fast' car. There is a point where timing changes for better power. VANOS - Constantly variable valve timing on the intake (i think) and through this optimal power at each point in the rev band. VTEC will have a 'boost' feeling due to the cam changeover. VANOS will not have a 'boost' feeling as there is no sudden change - if you feel something, its the powerband, and the torque curve, NOT 'vanos kicking in'. Vanos works on smoothing out the torque curve, and to give better power low in the powerband (compared to nonvanos). DOUBLE vanos, does the variable timing on the intake and exhaust (so better than just plain vanos) (started with e46 i believe) I-VTEC - VTEC, but with variable valve timing. So yes. Correct me if im wrong. Otherwise, memorise this, and stop the internet from infuriating me with saying 2 things are the same when they aint! 1N STYL 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 does E46 include my car, coz aparently its meant to? so i have been told
Gus 5 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 no your car will be a e36 denis..both systems do the same thing...change valve timing...thats why people say they are same thing.....even though they arent exactly
Dnz 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 Dude they are different. Vtec does something Bmw can never do...Bmw doesnt mess wth the camshaft like vtec does(im guessing its patented or something).
1N STYL 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 (edited) ok i'll ask BMW if its VANOS, and i'll ask them wtf it does, and it will all be settled then ok its going in get serviced tomz see how much of it is broken Edited May 2, 2004 by 1N STYL
gmccormack 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 The Honda system has the ability to change valve LIFT as well as timing & duration. The increased valve lift improves the gas flow & thus power. They are different all right, vtec actually does something good
Guest Spargo Report post Posted May 2, 2004 Porsche Variocam is the best of the lot. There. It's settled.

So no1 knows any of the spec's for the car? eg 0-100, 1/4mile or KW's? and no one knows where i can get an owners manual? speaking of prosche will the boxter breaks (disc and calliper) fit my car?, i know the bmw breaks are good but the porsche boxter brakes are funking nuts. 1N STYL 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2004 LOL ok sorry, I got my owners manual, and hopefully everthing in the car is A ok, i'll know when i find a bit of rd to drive the car, rather than bady sit it in traffic. Thanks "M3AN" for the Vanos info. I was in a GSR today, how do u guys think the BM would go against it in a straight line?? my BM is Auto. (yay more argument material). The bm seems to be just as fast but its hard to tell with the liner acceleration vs the boost of the GSR. Thanks.
