I was of the understanding it's a variable ratio rack?

It's for an E30, fyi.

depends on the year, 95 was variable while the 96 on was constant. (90% sure its that way around)

Seems to be a few internet myths about steering racks, with things regarding lock to lock turns, steering ratios, variable racks etc. I'm not exactly 100% on the subject, each time I read something about bmw racks it adds to the confusion.

Its a lot easier finding a Z3 rack and chucking that in. just wont quite have the M lock ..

I thought non-M Z3 rack ie. z3 1.9 was the quickest rack available for E30 swap?

The Z3 1.9 rack is the quickest of them all, followed by the E36 M3 rack. The Z3 rack bolts straight into the E30 and the E36 need spacers. With both racks you need to change your Power Stering hose fittings .

Other than I'm no race car driver, but noticed the differance between the two racks, which the Z3 is far more noticable if you are able to come across one. Peter R, fitted one in his Alpina, and spoke highly of the change over.
