More fuel tax

Recommended Posts

Economies of scale?? There is only so much you can fit in one truck.

The problem is that even though the price of petrol has increased dramatically in NZ over the last couple of years, there are no less cars on the road. The cost of petrol at the moment is not enough incentive for people to think twice before driving or trading in their gas guzzler for a smaller car. In the UK this has happened, my argument is that the price should be raised so people only drive when necessay and those adamant to pilot a large SUV pay for it.

Your looking a trying to solve one problem but in turn your creating bigger problems.....If you put the cost of fuel up buses will put their prices up as well......Air travel will increase making it less likely for people to travel impacting on the tourism industry all over the world, which in turns impacts on a whole lot of other companies (the domino effect really).

It just doesn't work.

My sentiments exactly. You need to toll roads or areas to avoid congestion. This system works because

- Those who can afford it, use it.

- Buses, commercial transport etc can be exempt thereby not affecting the cost of public transport and the cost of freight etc.

These systems work brilliantly all over the world and it astounds me at the lack of proactive manouvering to implement it here. Why they ever removed the toll from the bridge will remain a mystery. Mark my words, we will be paying to cross the harbour within the next 5 years if a decent government gets in next year.

Please think about it before touching the keyboard. If you have enough people, you can produce food, goods, whatever locally and thus save on transport. A small, isolated island nation with limited local production relying mostly on exports in one or two industries and tourism for its economy must transport almost everything. In the UK economies of scale allow much more local produce to be sold locally.

More fuel tax is not the magic solution to woo people to biofuels. The majority of nz would alread buy a car that could run on it if they could regardless of it being cheaper as with the exception of enthusiasts of particular models, noone drives a 10yo clapped out import by choice.

The government is f**ktarded if it thinks its going to force those who currently can't afford a car upgrade to upgrade by making it more expensive to own the car they can barely afford now.

No matter how cheap biofuel is compared to regular - do you think even most people on this site can afford a newish car? Count the e30's.
