I have a brand new pair of powerflex urethane control arm bushes for E30, still in the box.

its a way better replacement than the OEM bushes as its urethane, if you replace all the rear bushes with urethane it would advantage it by keeping the rear subframe tighter with less flexibility or movement, last longer than OEM bushes. maybe someone can enlighten your question a bit more?

Should these therefore only be installed when car is under alot of unsual strain such as a race car or when current bushes fail?

I did the front end on the 7 and they made a huge difference. Well worth the effort even if you drive like a granny IMO.

I've got these in my E30 and they make the steering feel tight and considerably more responsive, a huge improvement on the oem rubber donuts.
