Brake Rotors and Pads

Recommended Posts

Started the car this morning and the Check Engine (DSC) light was on plus Brake and ABS lights, also speedo and energy control didn't work, so I'm picking it's time for some new Rotors and Brake Pads unless anyone knows of another problem this may be indicating.

Are their any recommendations on replacement Rotors and Pads and do we have any discount deal with a supplier ?

In advance thanks.

Pete

The OEM rotors are very good. If you can find a better deal on Brembo's then buy them, but they are more expensive generally.

I have Mintex 1166 pads on ours and they are superb. Much less dust and endless braking performance.

I'm picking this is the E39 ??

If all those indicator lights are coming on, its not only pads and rotors

ABS pump is faulty by the sounds of it. You need to get it scanned.

Disconnect the ABS pump wiring harness. Start the car and see if everything else works normally.

The ABS pump is the first link in the canbus system and will effect other controls when it is faulty.

The circuit boards crack in the control unit on the pump

We use Rob at Power Stop Engineering in Tauranga to do our pumps

Hope that helps

Or call me (09) 2722546 or 021921377

Cheers

THanks Glen, yes 1999 E39 540, I'm not very technically minded but I'll attempt to do what you suggest, are you able to advise where the ABS pump wiring harness is?

Regards Pete

The ABS pump is sitting on the R/H inner guard 6 pipes go into the top of it. Just disconnect the the wiring harness plug. If in doubt get it scanned by an independant or the dealers.

Well I'm buggered.

I disconnected the loom at the ABS and reconnected it, nothing had changed other than when I put my foot on the break the DBC light went out. So upstairs for a cup of tea as you do, a couple of hours later went to pick up my daughter and everything is back where it belongs, no lights showing up and the speedo is working again. Very confusing, I will get the codes read to see what the great computer thinks happened.

Thanks for the help team, I learn't a bit and have some good advise for when I get new rotors and pads.

Regards Pete

It's what the BMW manual calls that thing marked L/100KM below the rev counter that tells you how much gas your gobbling when you put the foot down.

No Problem there. But... I'm away racing e30's till feb 4th. Might pay to get someone to look at it urgently.

Paul.

Well I'm doubly buggered now.

After a couple of days with no lights, I went out tonight and we're back to the start, all the lights back on and no speedo or energy control.

I will get the codes read to see what the great computer thinks has happened.

P#s%@d off Pete

low voltage can play havoc with these cars....get the battery checked at an auto electricians...i think its in the boot of your car.

Ignition switches play up to. When the vehicle plays up check voltage of fuse 41 and voltage at the violet wire on the back of the ignition switch. Should be the same as battery voltage or with the engine running it should be the same as system voltage. I still think you should get it scanned first....before you do anything at all. Don't start playing unless you diagnose the problem first. You could regret it.

Just had a read done on ABS and it came back with RL Speed Sensor faulty, I take it this is the Rear Left speed sensor, anyone know where this is located (wheel or axle) and what it looks like?

Sensor mounts into the back of the disc assy, one mounting lug with an allen key, follow the lead down the strut, wiring unplugs from car loom. Easy replacement
