leaks :(

My power steering was leaking for ages. Top up every month or so and it was fine.

Now its blown out and leaks in a puddle. empties in like a day!

any ideas short of a mechanic?

I'm afraid you have no choice, you are in for a replacement steering rack. There are no fixes.

I went through the same thing at the end of last year.

Budget for about $700 - $1,000 for a replacement recondiotioned rack, or see if you can buy a second hand one from somewhere.

Oh yeah, I should qualify this by assuming that the seals are leaking.

yeah the same thing happend to my mums car a couple weeks ago , it was resonably expensive to fix. but once its fixed you dont have to worry about it breaking again for a while

well i knew it was dead when i bought it but it only leaked slowly. Now it pisses out, something happened cause this has only happened in the last day.

I am assuming that it was just seeping past a seal to begin with, now the seal has fully blown.

Believe me, you need to replace the rack.

There is a rebuild kit for the E30 rack, I think its around $250 or I have a spare rack if your interested.

Took it to BMWorkshop.

Rack was dead, and neede re chroming(?). Hope i wasnt swindled but it cost ....

$1039!!!

Yeah, thats about right. It cost me around $980 (including the rechroming), and was quoted approx $750 if mine didn't require rechroming (for a replacement reconditioned rack, including installation).

or manual racks....c.7 hundy if you trade in your old rack....around 960 if you but it straight out...this is new from bmw...save some weight, get a quicker turn.....its what im going to do....extra reliability too...one less thing to go wrong
