E36 M3 Owners! What Engine Oil do you use???

Recommended Posts

Hi, Just wondering as Jerry Claytons BMW has recommended me to use SHELL ULTRA HELIX 5w40

but recently I was chatting with a longtime m3 owner and hes told me that he uese Castrol Edge 0w40.

I own the 3.0litre E36 m3.

Please let me know what you use and results.

Cheers!

Motul 4100T was recommended to me (its a 15W50).

BMW reckons you should use Castol RS 10W60 (or their own equivalent of it).

I reckon I have no idea of what to use, but I definitely plan on changing it regularly (every 5k).

I would use....and we do use a full synthetic 5w40. We sell ELF products. You dont specifically need to use ELF though.

I use Royal purple 10W-40, any group 4 or 5 pure Ester based synthetic with second number 40 is fine, TWS 10W-60 is definitely NOT suitable for E36 M3, it is too thick for vanos passages and will lead to premature failure, it is only suitable for E46 and later M3's

<Devils advocate> So why would BMW recommend it? </Devils advocate>

I agree with you, by the way.

was told directly by a dealer principle that dealers carry consumables for current range and one model previous, they then use whatever is closest for older models...

UK dealers have now started advising 40 grade after numerous vanos failures
