540 trans service

Recommended Posts

I want to get a service on my 540's trans. My regular mechanic hasnt done one -is this a problem & if so does anyone know where in Hawkes Bay other than the dealers I could get it done.

I have plenty of mechanic mates but I understand there are a few pitfalls for the uninitiated.

I haven't had a good experience with Jeff Grey.. Then again they'd never worked on an e21 before.

I'm not sure of any place I hate to tell you. I use the mobil garage in havelock, but not for anything like a bmw trans.

Talk to the guys at the caltex down omahu road (spelling? I haven't been up here in a long time). They've been easily the best in the bay I've used.

Edit - Also, the guy at peak autoworx in havelock seemed to know what he was doing with audis, so might be worth a shot too. Although I've had little experience with them too. Hope this helps.

Have you tried your yellow pages and looked for an Automatic Trans Specialist in your area ??

There is a procedure to follow and the correct oil must be used dependant on transmission type. Get them to replace the gearchange shaft seal and the wiring loom socket seals while they have got the pan off as well... its common for those to leak. It would also be prudent to clear adaptions after the trans service.

Glen's post: "..and the wiring loom socket seals...". BM Workshop quoted $310 plus GST plus fluid to do this on my car- but as you'd be having other work done this would be proportionately a lot less of course. I would get this done when I got a trans service- get it all done at once -worth doing
