Jeddy 0 Report post Posted August 14, 2008 Dibs, I'm definitely going to take a look at this. Can't work out rego though but will ring and find out. Plate surround is from Euromarque in chch, so probably not the one from welly.

bmw.maniac 1 Report post Posted August 26, 2008 Organised a check for it tomorrow(Wednesday), so if everything seems sweet and the price doesn't go to high i'll hopefully buy it. Anything specific i should ask to be checked/looked over? M42s built before 11/93 have a profile gasket (Timing Case Profile Gasket) problem. Something to do with using crappy rubber for the gaskets. I have no idea how you would check it. Maybe just ask if its been replaced under warranty.

Creaver 55 Report post Posted August 28, 2008 Does someone mind explaining why this car is so special? I'm guessing a 1.8L with an lsd and a special kit...or is there more?
antony 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2008 It has the 16v engine used in the e36. Plus there's only 50 odd in New Zealand.
Jeddy 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2008 (edited) Does someone mind explaining why this car is so special? I'm guessing a 1.8L with an lsd and a special kit...or is there more? From my understanding it has the m42 16v engine, ungraded suspension with stay bars etc, sports seats with different interior, iS lip, LSD, basket weaves (only 14" in this case) and according to one source only 20 were originally bought into the country.Good work Jed... Get it polished up and post some pics ASAP! Will do so this weekend weather pending. Anyone got any good tips for getting the red to look great? Its slightly faded in parts and will get it resprayed at some point but not yet. Edited August 28, 2008 by jeddy
Cale 36 Report post Posted August 28, 2008 It has the 16v engine used in the e36. Plus there's only 50 odd in New Zealand. Year, the twin cam M42 engine- has ~20kW more than single cam M40. I would of thought there was less than 50.
Mike 1 Report post Posted August 28, 2008 I wouldn't be expecting an LSD, they were only an option on those cars
Mark 178 Report post Posted August 28, 2008 Only 20 odd in fact. It was built to be a competitor to the Mark II Golf GTI, Peugeuot 106 and all the other hot hatches at the time as BMW was losing ground to the other manufacturers in that area. The car at the time was (and prob still is) faster than a 320i and almost as quick to the limit as a 325i. Also a lot more nimble thanks to the lighterweight engine. I have a Total BMW article on it somewhere, I'll see if I can find it and post some more info.
Mark 178 Report post Posted August 28, 2008 Here we go... E30 318is: Info taken from Total BMW - August 2007 issue - M42 16v engine - 140bhp - Faster in a straight line than 323i and quite a lot quicker than a 320i -Engine detuned so not to embarass the 325i - Suspension from 325i sport - 325i disc brakes all round - 14 inch BBS basketweaves, or optional 15 inch version - Recaro style BMW sports seats with M3 checked cloth - M-Tech 1 leather steering wheel - Colour coded bumpers and mirrors - Shadowline trim - Green tinted glass - iS front spoiler
martyyn 2 Report post Posted August 28, 2008 Interesting that there were only two people bidding and it only went for 6k. I appreciate there arent very many of these left, but has this auction finally shown the true value of these cars? There are plenty of people saying they are worth alot more, but that doesnt appear to be the case does it?

I appreciate there arent very many of these left, but has this auction finally shown the true value of these cars? There are plenty of people saying they are worth alot more, but that doesnt appear to be the case does it? There was an absolutely mint one at Archibalds in CHCH that sold for about 12 grand about 8 months back. So, for the right car yep, prices are getting up there. Having said that, money talks and right now I don't speak the language! Fortunately Jed does and if it's in as good nick as the pictures suggest he may have stumbled on a bargain and one of the few BMW's that will start appreciating in value soon.
