M3_guy 0 Report post Posted November 3, 2008 (edited) Hi guys. I bought a 1989 E34 525i the other day. seems to be a good option as a daily driver as the previous owner said it had new engine head and gasket put in as the engine had a blown gasket. the car has done 172,000km and just replaced cambelt. Only had the car for about a week and today when I replaced engine oil and filter I opened up the radiator cap for the first time and found brown colour oil around edge of the cap and possibly in the water. Straight away I suspected head gasket but there are no obvious sign that it is head gasket especially that it only just been replaced some 800km ago. There isnt any smoke from the exhaust or any loss of performance nor boiling coolant etc... The owner did tell me that I have to tighten the bolts on the head as it just been replaced. Any thoughts or suggestions on this would be much appreciated guys... Edited November 3, 2008 by M3_guy
*Glenn* 854 Report post Posted November 3, 2008 It may just be residue from the previous problem. I would flush the cooling system with a good radiator flushing additive to remove any residue and then see what happens.
