tire 10 Report post Posted December 17, 2008 Looking to repaint most of the black stuff on my e30. Window trim, bumpers, mirrors, spoiler. Do I need to sand it back to bare and primer it or can I just give it an 800 wet sand and shoot the paint over that. Doing it with a can, with some of that black bumper and trim paint one gets from repco. thanks
Apex 693 Report post Posted December 18, 2008 Ok, seems as none has replied I’ll give my amature car detailer findings I painted all the black on my Corolla (there was a lot) with bumper black and all I did is give it a bloody good clean before hand, I went through a few cans and found the trick was to spray it from a distance with multiple thin coats letting each coat dry before applying another. Se image for results. When fitting a lower front lip spoiler (fibreglass) I primered it twice before painting and the result wasn’t as good as the bumpers and skirts. My advice is to skip the primer on plastics. The window trims were painted when the car was re sprayed so can’t offer advice there but im pretty muck sure a primer should be used on steel.
