nath 134 Report post Posted September 30, 2004 Ok, so i was down at Mt Maunganui for a week or so, and i didnt drive my car for that time (i have an R32 beetle for a few months now for work). I went to start the bmw, it started first pop, but ran rough and blew some smoke. the smoke stopped after bout 8 secs, and ran smooth. I drove off and the engine (yes engine not gearbox) was making a sort of clicking noise, which sped up with the revs. The noise stopped after a minute. Since then, the car has been running like new, as it has been for the entire time and 15,000 kms ive had it for. This is a jerry clayton full history car since new. Why did it do this to me?? Im not desperate for an answer, just ideas or something. The car runs fine now nath

MattA 165 Report post Posted September 30, 2004 Quality NZ fuel.. we have the same prob with our bike (YZ250F '04) if it sits for a couple of weeks we have to drain the tank and thats with 50/50 98/AVGAS it was way worse before we started mixing the fuel
Guest Andrew Report post Posted September 30, 2004 valve guides are worn and probably leaks oil into the cylinders. Ticking could be the valves or injectors before they warm up.
cainchapman 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2004 I'm with Andrew. I'd be looking at Valves and tappets. Does it only smoke after the motor has not been running for a while? If so, probably the above cause.
