e39 540i Engine Light

Recommended Posts

Hi

Just got back from Dunedin, just as I was leaving the Orange engine light came on and car started idling very rough. Also not it's usual smooth self on the cruise back.

The manual says - "Deterioration of exhaust emission control valves".

What exactly does that mean?

Is this a DIY fix or do I need to get my friendly local garage to fix...

Thanks in advance

Tim

hi tim

sounds like either poor combustion ( misfire ) or an air leak . best to get the fault memory read by someone who has diagnostic equipment .

get smg to read the codes or scan or whatever, then get our knowledgeable gurus to interpret.I am sure SMG have a gt1 but imho they dont know what they are looking at.They could not diagnose the problem with the 540 i was looking at

SMG no longer local dealer! Now GWD (Holden/Toyota) - maybe I should have turned round and had the car plugged in with Cooke Howlison...

Definitely have it scanned to confirm. Although GT1 is best, any decent sparky should have a scanner to check it with

You could also try a sparky who is a Bosch Agent down there. Bosch KTS diagnostics should find the problem. Its going to be either a sensor fault ie: camshaft or crankshaft position sensor, air mass sensor, air leak, or the crankcase ventilator valve. Definately not DIY

make sure there is no oil from the valve covers leaking down pooling in the spark plug holes.I think at one stage there was an updated coil design to help with this problem.

Unfortunately they are not the cheapies.

I will find chassis number when I get home. Might pay for me to stock up!

All fixed - burble burble :D

Used a local garage who have good links with an auto electrician with a scanner. I hope the other 7 ignition coils behave!
