BMW 318ti maintenance and repairs

Hey, I want to buy a BMW 318ti (1995) this will be my first car but my dad is against buying bmws as one his friends who supposedly knows a lot about cars said that spare parts are expensive (far more compared to japanese makes) and so are repairs for bmws.

I wanted to know if this is true as there are so many 318s on trademe and turners and at car fairs.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Its not true

You can buy a crap Jappa as easy as buying a crap BMW.. be cautious and get a prepurchase inspection carried out by a dealer or a BMW specialist... no one else.. you'll enjoy the BMW more than a Jappa

My experience is that a BMW costs more to maintain than a Honda, in terms of average parts cost. However it doesn't cost nearly as much as what the average person seems to think. In fact the comment that BMWs are really expensive to maintain usually originate from people who have never owned a BMW (or happened to buy a dog). They just heard it from a friend of a friend of a friend.

IMHO, the extra cost involved in owning a BMW is well worth it. They're great cars to drive. But while some people can appreciate that, some will never understand. So it's really up to you. If you like them, make sure you get a pre-purchase inspection first (Glenn does them) and enjoy the motoring.

Oh, and there's always mechanical insurance if you still don't feel comfortable.

I'm not trying to be rude.. however if you are worried about the difference of $10... maybe its not a car ..or a BMW you should be considering purchasing.

I was in the same boat a couple of years ago mate.

Mother thought parts, etc. were astronomical compared to the jap equivalents. The truth is of course they're gonna be slightly more expensive, its a whole different class of car. But not excessively more.

I've had my 323 for a year or so, cost me Zero so far. It is due for a service soon though, but any car needs services. If you are worried about the cost of services, you can always do it yourself. Its not rocket science.

The key is to get a minter, or atleast one thats been looked after well. You'll honestly regret it if settle for an average one.

i meant to say if it is 10's of dollars than i would go for the bmw as that would not be expensive

ive done some more research into the spare parts and they dont seem to be astronomically expensive think i mite go for it
