tibbs.james 1 Report post Posted April 9, 2009 THAT !!! is a brand new Mahle Piston Ring. Popped it in the piston ring expander, aligned it all up. started to expand it, this was the first one too and it didn't feel normal. Then SNAP The others felt nice and springy as they expanded so hell if i know. Its not like i can take them back either. Uh Gutted, yes i know how to use a piston ring expander. So that's it, long weekend of engine building = fail Bank account next Tuesday is going to be $160 poorer.

E30 325i Rag-Top 2959 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 Talk nicely to the guy that supplied you the rings, and explain that you think it was faulty as the rest are Ok. If he's a half decent chap he would replace it and send the broken one back to the factory for testing. And if that doesn't get you anywhere, you can have a bit of a rant at them to make you feel better
tibbs.james 1 Report post Posted April 11, 2009 Only I'm not sure where they came from or if i can get a hold of the invoice/receipt ( they were a present form a mate ) On the bright side, i would rather have a faulty ring on the bench rather than inside the engine. c.robertson00 11 Report post Posted April 11, 2009 I had the same thing happen to me with a 1600cc escort engine and they were MAHLE rings too. Atleast a set of rings was only $40 lol
tibbs.james 1 Report post Posted April 13, 2009 Uh I have worked out what happened. It looks like as i was expanding the piston ring, the tool got all wonky- and of course myself having not used a ring expander very often more pressure plus twisting = boom. I tested this on an old piston ring and while it installed fine it felt similar to what it did when the other one broke. I have found a way to get my "individual" piston ring of the same brand through an engine shop. I have also successfully installed the other pistons-rings and bearings to very good results. However a bad experience has worked out alright in the end and i know for next time. and I have my engine block built up minus one piston.
