Fuel/Oil Additives?

Recommended Posts

Yesterday i was filling up at the gas station, and was looking around the motoring aisle for some turps

Next thing the attendant was asking me if i wanted help picking out a fuel additive...

It got me thinking, are oil/fuel additives needed?Motor-up etc...because i've never used any! :o

Does anybody here use anything *special*??

I always assumed the higher octane especially, contained detergents so wouldn't motor-up and rest of it be a waste of time? and something along the same lines if you get your cars serviced regularly?

edit:spelling

BMW recommend the Redline fuel system cleaner. You can buy it at BNT and it's not too expensive (cheaper than trademe).

I've used it and I think it made the car run a bit smoother. I add it about every six months.

Steer well clear of lube additives like Motorup. Totally unnecessary and numerous independent studies have found they often do more harm than good. Put the money you would spend towards a better quality engine oil instead.

As far as octane goes BP Ultimate is all good!

i run an injector cleaner through just before an oil change

Thats a good idea. That'll make it easy to remember.

also if the high detergent content of the cleaner contaminates the oil its gone with the oil change
