advice needed on servicing....

hey guys, I have a 1993 E36 318IS.

Some guy told me the other day that I need to get the car serviced at a proper BMW garage and that when I turn the ignition on the lights sgow red and orange when they should be green.

Is it true that I shouldnt be servicing it at my local garage?

pls help...

only reason I can think of is the garage will need a 100 odd dollar tool to 'reset' the service lights back to full, or green if you like.

I would recommend however, to go to someone whom services these cars often, and has a good reputation.

An independent BMW garage should be fine. If you just want to reset the service lights indicator, you can use a coat hanger. You can find the instruction somewhere in the net.

Yup, I have a piece of insulated wire that I use to reset mine. Put each end of the wire into the right place, turn the car on for 5 seconds...and woohoo, all reset.

Mine is an E30 though, but I imagine that an E36 would be no differant.

As for taking it to a specialist BMW mechanic for pure servicing...garbage, just take it to any reliable mechanic.

but g unit you have moved to higher quality tools "insulated wire".. sounds to high tek to me.

Bah, insulated wire is half-pie, you should be using insulated fuse wire for a good back yard jobbie

CRZYSAM, if you want to keep a service history then do the bmw centre or authorised dealer otherwise you can do everything yourself, including the service indicator reset.

BMW centres charge an arm and a leg for a service especially a service 2 which will be over the $500 mark the thieving little coconuts

I beleive you can just take the car to get serviced somewhere else and just take it to a BMW authorised dealer to get it reset.

Can keep a service record yourself pretty easy.
