'90 320i E30 oil leak!

Recommended Posts

hey guys

i have a 1990 320i e30 and over the past 4 or 5 days it has been dropping some oil. I drive off about ten minutes later the old man calls me up and says i have left a sweet patch....of oil..

No warning lights have come on? no funny noises in the engine?

what could this be?? my beamer is lowered and i suspected was banged around a bit by the previous owner but has been fine for the last 3 months of which i have owned it..

PLEASE HELP!!

:( :(

I got a quote from BM Workshop last week and they said the gasket only costs about $35 but the labour will thake 3-4 hours. They quoted me about $350 i think but i guess you could find a cheaper mechanic etc. because they charge about $75- 100 an hour i think.

But its hard to tell where it is really coming from

Why don't you jack it up and have a look where it's coming from?

Could be anything from oil filter, sump gasket, from or rear main seals, head, valve cover is a common one...

If need be degrease the engine too. Could be power steering oil or gearbox for all you know.. Pays to be sure you are fixing the Actual problem.

Yeah exactly.

Easily one of those things, do not forget it is a 19 year old car now.

My 540i has small leaks from the rear main seal, a bit from around the oil pan sensor and the diff. Not major but you can see it if you look under the car, it rarely drips onto the drive way though.
