E30 removing AirCon System

Recommended Posts

I thought this may be Performance related, as it will be taking away weight, and also clear up room in the engine! But ADMIN/s, please feel free to move else where if its not related :)

Anyways to my question..... <_<

I want to completely remove my AIRCON system (in the engine bay) and just wondered if anyone has done this before or knows how? Maybe a "walk thru"? Like What and Where are all the parts located that are to be removed? Do I need to rewire anything afterwards?

I know I need remove the Compressor/Pump (already cut the belt off when I replaced fanbelt) and need to remove the hoses going thru the engine bay. Just need to know HOW to remove the parts and what parts so I can then say, "its all gone!" Is there ahything located under the dash? For example, in my Probe when I removed the AirCon, there is a unit behind the dash, which I am not going to bother with - for now...

Any help or information appreciated.

Oh and reason I want to remove it, as I never use it & never will so its just taking up room and adding a whole 2kg in weight lol  but hey, any weight lost is good...right!?

If you want to remove it completely, you'll need a non-AC heater unit. Other than that, I just kept removing and unplugging bits until it was all gone. It's fairly straight forward to follow the piping.

Yeah just follow all the pipes and remove everything you see really... Mines all removed in the engine bay, I left the in/out pipe were they go into the firewall. Then cabin side everything is still there, don't see the point in changing that out as it works exactly the same, A/C or not.

i did mine a few weeks ago, have to pull the radiator out and remove the fan and all that, then the pump off the side of the engine and just follow the pipes back to where they go past the bonnet clip thing and undo it there, and pull the tubes and referigant canister out , no need to re wire anything, as its only an accesory kind of thing, total weight would be approx 15kg

The pump on the 306 is a good 3-4 kg alone, then add the condensor, piping, referigant canister, etc... a good 10kg easy to remove...

A friend deloomed his race car and removed 7kg of excess wiring from his mirage.

Have just removed the fan/radiator part and one of the pipes & the small canister but cant remove the pump (that has the belt) because one of the bolts for the pipes is to big for my cresent (will have to borrow a mates).

EDIT: When I ungassed it, it only took like 10secs to empty out, so was definitely needing regassing (explains why it didnt work when I got the car & played with the buttons lol), so wasnt going to waste $$ with regassing! :)

Now my 2nd question.

-Once I have removed it all, how do I go about removing the wiring thats left over? I noticed there is 2 (or 3) wires coming from the canister and another 3 wires going to the fan. Do I need to pull everything off the front end & then remove all wiring except the lights? How would I go about making sure I dont remove the wrong wires? I know is not a major, but I dont want wires liying around going to nothing...I also just noticed a 2 wire connectors on both sides (under HL assemblies) that connect to nothing, will get photos tomorrow, one of you will know what they for (probably spotlights?, but my car dont have them).

DRTDVL: thats alot of wiring! Did he weigh it all after removal? I should weigh all my junk when finished, be interesting. And with the ALLOY its going straight into my scrap pile of other crap for when the Alloy prices go up again! A good few 100 $s worth waiting when its at $1.50 a KG again - Im more than happy to wait

I assume these 2 blue plugs are for spotlights? Identical on both sides.

And I assume these are the hoses for the aircon?

Whats this black thing? Located under the passengerside headlight with no wires coming from it (but isnt one on driverside).

ian't it illegal to vent the refrigerant ? Oh well too late now..

That thing on your headlight is for the in-cabin headlight adjuster if you e30 has it, came standard on the jap imports I think. Mine had it (it's a little control on the knee bolster under your steering column for headlights). Doesn't look like its hooked up though, There are 2 water tubes running from the headlights into the cabin and to the adjuster usually.

DRTDVL: thats alot of wiring! Did he weigh it all after removal?

Ya he completely removed the entire loom for the car engine bay and interior looms, Weighed both looms together the stated cutting... He then re-weighed the looms after he'd finished.

I called a couple places when i was looking at removing my system. There is some gases that are legal to vent. I know the gas in a 95 Peugeot 306 is legal.

Nice. I did the same. What I noticed:

+20hp.

+300C in cabin temps in summer.

I noticed a nice increase in turn-in speed and directive-ness (?). Don't need A/C in NZ anyway. Pump weighs 13kg + 3kg fan and 2kg radiator. Still have to get the dashboard out to complete the job in the future.

Yep alot of weight for sure. Im sure after removing the radfan, it would allow more & better airflow into the actually radiator? Surely that itself, would increase performance the aircon radfan would've been blocking alot off. Why the heck they put it in the front anyway? Engine temp is more vital than cabin temp! <_<

Will be removing the indash parts soon.
