E46 and E36 318i Auto Gearbox Question

Hi guys, just wondering if someone can help me out here.

My daily 1998 E46 318i Gearbox (Auto) has just givenup ghosts for the second time during my ownership and now facing another big repair bill unless I can find a cheaper solution.

I know Ray has few 318i Gear box from a 1997 E36 318i and I believe they are the same brand (GM) as whats on my car.

Are they the same? or is it possible to use the e36 318i gearbox on my e46?

Any input would be much appreciated.

E36 & E46 are completely different and work on a different operating systems. What is wrong and should it not be under warranty ?

A second hand gearbox must have the same part numbers (exactly the same) not just the gearbox is looking the same or the same brand.
