oscar90 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2009 as title says my steering wheel wobbles at higher speeds usually when braking gently, this would be warped discs/rotors as far as i know?? any other possible problem? "check brake lining" fault is on aswell if that helps, although im sure this is brake shoes/pads haha i may aswell mention it juuust incase its helps Cheers Andrew
39KiwiTouring 2 Report post Posted November 1, 2009 I had a similar problem I knew I had to replace a tie rod end, they go on everycar, but my I had handling slight wobble and ratly steering casing behind the wheel, it ended up being the UJ in the steering column thats replaced and it is now a totally different car, it handles steers, heaps more cntrol and positive feel about it can't believe it has passed so many warrants, so take it a specialist and get it looked at. oscar90 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2009 yeah I thought it could be steering straight off! interesting to hear about the huge difference after changing the UJ though! but only happens when braking which pretty much lead me straight to warped rotors, just want to double check with other people, and get other suggestions like you've given cheers! 39KiwiTouring 2 Report post Posted November 1, 2009 Sounds like yours needs pads and rotors and maybe a machine skim on the discs, E39 chew out the front's.
*Glenn* 854 Report post Posted November 1, 2009 A combination of worn brakes and worn reaction rod bushes can cause this. I'd check the brakes, reaction rod bushes and steering linkages
mtk540 3 Report post Posted November 2, 2009 Andrew. Wobbles at 70-80kmh? Touch the brakes the steering wheel wrenches from your hands? You've got a case of the E39 "shimmy". I had that on mine and after lots of research found it to be a well documented trait on E39s especially. I went through the whole lot - wheel balance and alignment, checking for bent rims, shaved the rotors, changed rotors and the pads ... and still there. Finally replaced the front thrust arm bushes which did the trick. Mike PS: Thought you had it on the market ??
oscar90 0 Report post Posted November 2, 2009 Thanks for the reply Glenn, Mike: Yep it's on the market, wish I could say to buy a 540i but back to study for me so downgrading . My mothers quickly falling in love with it though , now shes trying to sell her car to buy mine, which suits me, as theres been no interest other than "does it have leather seats". reguardless i'd like it fixed, it annoys me, and if I were buying a car it'd put me off Can't remember if it wobbles at 70-80km/h Mike, but I notice alot when braking from 100km/h all the time, if you slam the brakes it's not there, but put them on gently it shakes, so i strongly thought it was the discs, but sounds like it could be afew other things ASWELL, glad i aksed on here now! Cheers
darkwolf 0 Report post Posted November 2, 2009 I've felt that a number of times myself. But usually only when cold. I've always just put it down to a temperature thing. Would be interested to see if it's the same thing.

kiwiscot 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2010 A combination of worn brakes and worn reaction rod bushes can cause this. I'd check the brakes, reaction rod bushes and steering linkages Quite right. Had the E39 shimmy (70/80km cruising or braking). New "Thrust Arms' (Reaction rods?) and it's as good as gold. A mere $1,000. (Its not a car...it's a hobby)
