Lucan 196 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 Just throwing ideas around and wasn't sure if you can...but the story goes I was looking at a car that hadn't been garaged what looks like its entire life. Its black, and the finish is anything but clear and shiny Can you sand/scotch or cut the clear and put simply, respray clear over the existing job to give a better finish? Or will a days hard work cutting and polishing give the same fin? Bellicose??
Nobimmer 694 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 Would have thought it would be bloody difficult to get just the clear coat off without touching the base wouldnt it?
kerry 10 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 i would have to say no man. once you start rubbing or scotching your likely to rub through the base coat. all in all a new coat of paint will be the best option.
bellicose 9 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 (edited) It's a hard one to answer without seeing it mate, but will try. You could give it a good go with a very mild cutting compound (by hand) then a good quality polish, however this will be a short term fix, could be a month or could be a year. The thing is the damage has been done. Now if the paint is in sound condition with no major chips or scratches then it's probably better to reclear. Get some 1200 grit wet sandpaper, i use 600, but for someone that doesn't have the experience 1200 is best, it will take longer but less chance of cutting through the clear and start removing the colour. Be sure to take extra care near edges and corners. You just need to dull it down so it looks flat. Let me know if ya have any more Q's mate.
