tire 10 Report post Posted April 19, 2010 (edited) Preamble: 1990 m20b25 with a g260 and short shifter. New clutch, balanced and resurfaced PP, lightened flywheel (6.8kg). New (later type) release bearing. Clutch has been bled thoroughly, I even removed the slave and pushed the rod in slowly to get all the air out. Ok so when I release the clutch I'm getting a whirring / scraping noise. The car moves forward and back fine but the noise doesn't seem right. Also, the clutch has no feel - can't feel it bite. Can people with experience throw a few ideas around on what the noise may be and why the clutch feels lost? Silver fox, you've done a few manual conversions - any clues? PS, car was auto, now converted to manual. I'm getting these noises on my first attempt at a drive. tire 10 Report post Posted April 19, 2010 Also, I just checked and I'm using the correct release bearing and "clutch release fork lever"
Guest Ari Gold Report post Posted April 19, 2010 Record the noise and upload to youtube? Would help immensely.

QuickSilver 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2010 I don't hear much except you moving around the camera a lot! I hear a sort of groaning noise but that's a far cry from scraping.
tire 10 Report post Posted April 19, 2010 Yes Its not really a scraping your right. More a groaning. Sorry for the clunking around, it was dark and I was trying to park the car at the same time.
Silver Fox 43 Report post Posted April 19, 2010 Hard to tell much from that Max, is it slipping at all? I had one which I stuffed up by letting the gearbox twist as I fitted it, put a twist in the clutch plate and made some funny noises. I'd suggest you slip it off and check everything's alright inside, may be the only way to be sure?
tire 10 Report post Posted April 19, 2010 Didn't slip when I reversed it hard back up the drive earlier today but to be honest I've never felt a slipping clutch so I cant be sure. Dont think I've twisted it as the box went in nice and easy but yes, may end up just having another look Thanks for having a look anyway foxy.
QuickSilver 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2010 When said groan is occurring, is anything out of the ordinary happening? Any vibrations through the floor or shuddering that smooths out once moving? I would take it apart, also.
tire 10 Report post Posted April 19, 2010 No shudders but there is a clunk from the rear
pureboiracer 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2010 was converted to manual??? have you checked spigot bearing? also is the spacer plate fitted to the flywheel? possibly flywheel was not correctly machined and the clutch isnt fully engaging or releasing. or incorrect setup with the pp causing incorrect release/engage? tire 10 Report post Posted April 20, 2010 was converted to manual??? have you checked spigot bearing? also is the spacer plate fitted to the flywheel? possibly flywheel was not correctly machined and the clutch isnt fully engaging or releasing. PS, car was auto, now converted to manual. I'm getting these noises on my first attempt at a drive. ^Answers the first question. I put a new spigot bearing in. Spacer plate is fitted on the correct side of the flywheel, (starter wouldn't engage if it wasn't). Incorrectly machined flywheel is a possibility but a very very slim one as it was done by a reputed balancing specialist, as was the flywheel. or incorrect setup with the pp causing incorrect release/engage? Good point. I'm using the PP out of an early g240 (gearbox is a late g260). Realoem says the diameters are the same but the part numbers are different for early 320is with big plate shifters vs 88 325i which this box came out of. tire 10 Report post Posted April 20, 2010 (edited) Uncle Glenn just came around and checked it out, the master cylinder is maybe a bit sticky but otherwise he thinks its ok (Glennc an elaborate here). I'm going to keep driving it around locally till Monday then take it into Glenns workshop for another look over on the hoist. After Glenn left I went for a cheeky bewstski and sh*t it moves! Can't stop grinning! Oh and the clunk from the rear was just my exhaust rattlying around. Edited April 21, 2010 by tastic
