bravo 34 Report post Posted February 20, 2005 Pretty much. You get the card installed and set it up, and then away you go to try your luck. The practice is unethical (all though I don't believe illegal) and is known as warpathing. The problem is, is that there are f-all wireless users in NZ to scab off, and due to the problems with warpathing overseas, most should know about it and thus will have security in place - although it only takes one company without security and you're set. Plus, in this day and age, there are plenty of personal users with wreless in their homes you could try to tap into - although it would take a bit of driving araound, and my guess is that those up with it enough to have wireless will know a thing or two about protecting their connection. aliluya 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2005 Everyone that i know that uses wireless lan knows how to set protection onto it ... it's a very simple process ... so good luck trying to find one that you can latch onto ... I've got wireless lan at home and it's awesome .. i can use it in anyroom i feel like .. even in the garden ... Wireless lan works with a access point (which is what your trying to find) and another card plugged into your computer to access it ... i think it must work on the similar theory as bluetooth does ... You have a base with wireless, and your card in your laptop is the handset. Similar frequency range as a cordless too. Yeah i know it's further range than bluetooth .. but that was the only thing i could think of at the time .. haha ....Now that i think about it ... it IS very much like a cordless phone .. i had to return a cordless phone back because the frequencies i got is the exact some as the frequencies on my wireless lan .. and i didn't realise at the time of buying .. bravo 34 Report post Posted February 20, 2005 Yeah they run in the 2 - 2.4 GHz band. Often have probs with cordless phones and wireless networks, but you can get them set up to work alongside. The problem with that frequency range is that it is really useful for long-range transmission, and is very cheap to buy a chunk of (which is why it is so popular), but also means there are a lot of interfernce possibilities - RTK GPS rovers also use this band, so you have wireless LANS, cordless phones, high precision GPS users, video senders, garage door openers, intercoms, car alarm remotes etc all vying for the same little slice of radio waves. It is setup so that all these things should work alongside, but there are always small crossovers where two devices use frequencies very close to one another.
