Wear on Inner Shoulders

Just took the E39 530i Touring for a WOF

Passed OK, but inspector said all tyres were wearing on inner shoulders - especially the front drivers side.

When I went in the pay, the office worker spotted the notes and said ' Yea we see that a lot with BMWs'

so ....

Is it worth me getting an alignment done, or is the office worker correct - just the way they are ?

Tyres listed by WOF inspector as 2mm front 4mm rear , so should I just wait till I fit a new set ?

Continentals and not sure of Ks as only had the car a couple of months - they were on it when purchased.

The 2mm 'estimate' but WOF inspector does seem low - the groves are still quite deep to my eye.

Ross (BM Workshop) told me that the rears in BMW's have about 1.5 degrees of negative (I think) camber and they all wear the inside shoulders. Which is precisely why he recommended using a non-directional tyre on them (so it can be flipped over to get the most life out of the tyre)....

Mine were shocking when I first got it - the outside of the rears were fine, but the inside was down to canvas!

mine wears the inside of the rears and outside of the fronts,i swap them if i can,on the same side,do not swap diagonally(if you also have this type of wear pattern).

I don't find that at all. My 323 and my fathers 540 wear down tyres perfectly evenly.

E36's have a bit of rear camber from factory but camber isn't the only cause of wear on the inside of the tyre. Excessive toe out can cause wear on the inside of the tyre which is actually the cause in a lot of cases. Excessive toe out mixed with camber can obviously cause accelerated wear.

If the toe settings are just 1/32 inch off its appropriate setting each tyre on that axle will scrub almost 1 meter sideways every kilometre.

My understanding after reading a lot about set ups is to set front toe to 0, and rear to 0.2.

Front drivers makes it sound like an alignment issue.

My E39 with 18's has no problem with front but "horrible" cutout of inside shoulder on rears - throw away with rest of tyre still at about 60% tread - a real piss off!!

Has been running Toyo but after discussion with Jonno (Zenetti) recently changed the rears to a harder Asymetric tyre with higher silica content & running a higher pressure - will see how these go:-

Car has had several wheel align checks from a person with a brain who knows suspension geometries well, he has even taken a little - camber out of it. Toe is correct. Hopefully a change of tyre is going to fix.

Yes inner rear tyre wear on my touring as well.

I just brought two second hand roulette wheels and tyres toyo's I think with 5mm for $180.00 for both I have spare rims now as well.

yes to the wheel alignment,

but prior to that ensure that suspension components are not worn

best you take it to a BMW specialist familiar with the E39, they are prone to wearing components out
