e32 false coolant level warnings?

Recommended Posts

Hi. My 1990 E32 735il keeps displaying the coolant level warning message when I turn it off, but the level seems to be completely fine. When I am driving the car the water temperature needle sits right in the middle of the gauge and doesn't get any hotter.

Is this a common problem? I know that false tail and side light warnings are.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Michael, welcolme to the site.

Is the coolant level definitely above the level sensor?

If so - a sensor/wiring/connection problem

probably a sensor. disconnect and short the terminals if your cheap, get a new sensor if your not. if your cheap dont forget to keep an eye on the level like the olden days

Thanks heaps.

The coolant level is at the mark on the reservoir and the level doesn't seem to be decreasing, nor is the car overheating.

How do I find out if the sensor is at fault or if it is an electrical problem?

as i said, disconnect the plug and short the terminals on it and then turn the car to on and see if the dash/checkpanel light is on after starting the car.

or as mike said, if it's filled with water it will be quite obvious once you remove it and have a look.
