e46 320i Throttle body replacement.

Hey guys,

Looking at buying a 1999 320i with 140ks. The people were selling it, after it had sat for 3 months. Then on a 2nd test drive the EML light came up. Basically it suffers from no power and surges badly.

Took it to be tested and mechanic said needs a throttle body replacement and quoted $1k to remedy.

I have a basic mechanical knowledge and am fairly confident I can replace the throttle body. But just wanted advice on a) if there are any tricks to it and and advice against getting a second hand part (for 1/4 the price).

What was the fault code ??... sounds more like an AMF sensor fault

The owners took it in, so dont have the code, will try and get hold of them to get it. Sounds like it might be best to take it to get tested myself? Assumed it must have been the throttle body code if thats what he quoted but guess the mechanic may have been chasing work.

The cars cheap, thats the only reason I'm chasing it up, but needs tyres, wof and reg etc because they havent used it for a long time.

I'm in Whangarei, car is in Avondale. Its a pain as will have to trailer it unless its somewhere close. Assume you work for Motor Worx? Are you guys open Saturdays? Whats the basic charge for fault test and pre purch inspection?

People are genuine, car just has lots of little things that add up to lots that needs spending on it. But need to get it running before I make any final decision.
