nath 134 Report post Posted November 21, 2010 (edited) edit: 1985 318i M10 130Km's Did my valve clearances as per owners manual yesterday when stone cold, sounded sweet as afterwards, until car was properly warmed up when they got noisy (uniformly noisy nonetheless). This is the first car I have had 'tappet' complaints for, the other manually adjusted engines have all been M20. Why the big change between cold and hot, surely BMW would not have sold a premium car even in the 80's with this warm noise. Anyone have tricks of the trade? I know that noisy is better than fully quiet but the difference between cold and hot is silly. Maybe I just STFU and put up with it? hotwire 352 Report post Posted November 21, 2010 Are you sure you adjusted/tightened them correctly? What is the state of the cam?
nath 134 Report post Posted November 21, 2010 Yep checked checked and checked again.... also repeated process this morning. No channelling on cams, and the rocker shafts don't APPEAR or feel to be worn/ have play... Old BMW/ Merc mechanic friend of mine did say that they wear on the roker shaft, but I just cant believe that with this engine and those km's/ condition/FSH
