heater / aircon only sometimes working

Hi

I'm having some slight issues with my heater / aircon

A couple of days ago I went to go to a mates place and noticed there was no airflow coming from the vents

I cranked up the speed and still nothing, I also tried the demister and still nothing

All the lights show up on the control panel perfectly

It doesn't matter whether I have the aircon on or off either (actually, any setting at all doesn't provide any air flow)

Last night when I went out, it decided it was going to work again, so I thought hmmm maybe it just needed to be turned off and on like an IT guy would say to do with a PC issue lol

But then when I left my mates place, it wasn't working again

Lose wire maybe?

Or something major?

1996 E36 323i coupe

has the digital hvac control panel

Common fault with the e36's , I have done heaps of them of other people. Don't do them any more cause i don't have an e36 to test them on. Read up on this link and do it yourself if you are willing to. Its pretty easy.

Not sure if that is your problem. When it happened to mine, the display went dark and was like the unit was off/locked (no buttons did anything)

Could also be the final stage resistor.

Fan speed resistor the most likely issue. $80 @ Hellbm

would it be on the passenger side or the drivers side?

(I'm guessing the one in the link is left-hand drive)

the culprit was ... the hedgehog-like resistor
