Mark 178 Report post Posted March 16, 2011 How long is a piece of string? Some bits from the Total BMW buyer's guide: E34 M5's were the last handbuilt M cars, and the S36 and S38 engines are very highly strung. S36 is said to be more reliable. They need specialists to work on them and rebuilds can be prohibitively expensive. The self-levelling suspension is REALLY expensive to repair if it goes wrong. But you can replace these with standard aftermarket shocks made for the M5. Radiators are unique to that model... so will be hard to find. As is the exhaust. In short... they can be cheap to buy... but you'll need a deep wallet to maintain one.
