North Island Road Conditions

Recommended Posts

 Ok so My Misses and I are doing a Road trip from Auckland to Palmerston North next week, and i am just starting to think about the best route to take.... is anyone out there able to give me a heads up on the road conditions between point A and B with warnings like road works etc? Last time i did this trip at night I collected a nice pot hole in amongst some not so well signed road works. It was 12pm and speed was a little factor though  but a heads up on where road works are this time would be ideal!!!

Go down the west side through King Country. Great roads, no truck traffic =D Best Roads I've driven so far.

yeahp, turn right at ngaruwahia and take the road through to national park, then go back to SH1 through waiuru seems to be the best way, ive done it probably 20 times, faster than going SH1 the whole way

yeah last time i did the trip i turned right at ngaruwahia and took the road through to national park, and went straight through to wanganui, wasnt a bad route really enjoyed the twists and turns prior to wanganui too, got the tyres pretty warm ;)

The king country, are you meaning take state highway 3 through to new plymouth and down, i'm thinking i might do that route on the way back up if it's a scenic one as it will be day time, we want some nice scenery

Road re-sealing season has largely ended they usually do them between late Dec and Easter, as the rain causes havoc on new seal, I would go straight down the guts through Hamilton, Taupo, Waioru etc, that Naki way will add 2 hours but scenic through awakino etc. The Mangaweka's is finished no dog leg further south over the railway lines, by (by the plain) north of Taihape, I travel that road every month.

Thats the way I go Paul vinegar hill, if I was heading straight into Palmy though, I live in the pohangina valley, I would go straight ahead and through Hunterville you can stop at Mike j Trading link below and check out his selection of relics he has there always a good site seeing tour if you are into old cars.
