Daughters Car again...

Recommended Posts

hi Y'all, Quick question, quick answer??

'90 e30 320i auto...

"Dad, my cars playing up... can I borrow yours?"

So I swapped cars. Hers was running like the spark plugs were all hammered closed.. Missing and farting around.

So I took it home and swapped the coil out of the old e23 735.

Improvement straight away. That was the problem, coil's shot...

BBBut, after driving round for an hour, the same problem recurred, rough at idle, not pulling away. Clears at about 2500 rpm.

So after searching round for an auto shop that will sell a coilo, no luck. I came home and scoured my junk pile for another coil.

Better again, but still farting around...

So have I lucked upon 3 coils 5 minutes from the bin? or is it something else?

It had a new fuel pump about a year ago and has all the injectors serviced.

The fuel pump was an aftermarket, not oem??

Normally idles fine, so I' thinking electrical...?

Any quick fixes? Or do I have to put her car in the shop and leave her mine for the next 2 weeks?

Cheers Y'all.

Do a quick check after the AFM for any cracks / breaks in the intake pipe.

Had similar issues with mine when I had a split in my intake, incorrect air measurement causing car to splutter and fart around like it was having sparking issues.

Yeah, cheers, checked that, all good. New pipes, hoses intakes etc when we bought it...

same thing happened to mine e34 once, 'kept running at 4000rpm! Couldn't slow it down, scary, but fixed that...

It's running pretty hoary, even at idle. Changed the coil, fine, but not for long...

PS buy my e28! see your mate that was gunner buy it, anti...

Is that the one sitting down Invers way?

Don't tempt me, already have a bmw sitting at parents I need to be working on, not that I wouldn't love a nicely restored E28

check the condition of the dizzy cap and rotor , also the fuel pumps and fuel pump relays fail on these cars .

Yup, it was the rotor, had 2 lend her my car while I was away at work, and she's scraped my mags!

Still waiting on a new coil, they kept giving us the wrong one.

It's idling like crap now, I'll clean out the ICV when I get back, have to lend her my car again.

And yeah, that e28 needs a good home, I'm paying storage on it & I'm over it!

FREE TO A GOOD HOME!

I woke up monday ann my car was gone, but there was an e30 in my garage.. I knew I was drunk...

It's idling poorly, drops out and surges...

Wood this just be an unrelated issue, clean the ICV, or perhaps related to the electrics?

Still waiting on the right coil...

Also, are all ICV's the same? I've a couple spares, 1 off an e23 ann another out of an e34 525.

I scavenge bits from any cars that pass my way... Mind you, Del's car has a new one. Just curious??

Cheers Y'all. from Mt Keith, in the middle of nowhere!

Hi Y'all. a few weeks later and she's still driving my car.

New plugs helped a lot, rotor and coil..

Just about running fine now, but now and then the spark deterirates, at idle, low revs and pulling away. it clears itself and takes off.

This is intermittent, otherwise goes fine now!

I only get 1 week in 3 off, and if I don't sort it She'll have my car for another 2 weeks...

Taking it in for a diagnostic tomorrow!

I'll finish this post once I know what it is...

Cheers Y'all!
