Palazzo 477 Report post Posted June 24, 2011 Over the last few days, the gear change on the E30 (manual) has got very notchy. It's particularly bad in 2,3,4, 1& 5 are fine. It gies half way in to gear and is very stiff to get in the rest of the way. If you're very slow, it's not too bad. Gearbox fluid is fine (recently checked) and clutch is not too old. Any ideas? hotwire 352 Report post Posted June 24, 2011 Is the clutch releasing properly? Pedal feel? Slave cyl travel? Try bleeding
Palazzo 477 Report post Posted June 24, 2011 Clutch pedal is heavy, but always has been, possibly heavier than normal. Slave and master have been replaced in last 5 yrs. It feels like a shift mechanism problem, rather than clutch or synchro, but who knows?
pureboiracer 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2011 does it do the same thing if the car is turned off aswell as turned on?
Palazzo 477 Report post Posted June 24, 2011 Yip, good call, 3rd can't be selected right now with engine off.
pureboiracer 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2011 its only 3rd thats the problem? does it change if you push the clutch in with the car off?
Palazzo 477 Report post Posted June 24, 2011 Driving, 2,3, and occasionally 4 are snicky for want of a better description, easy part way into gear, then sticky. Right now, with engine off, 1,2,4,5 easy, 3 same problem as described above.
Palazzo 477 Report post Posted June 25, 2011 Anyone? As it does it when it's off and feels like it's sticking rather than a mechanical problem, do I assume selector rod/bushings something similar? Where to take it close to central Akld?
pureboiracer 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2011 possibilities are, synchro, selector rod jamming(either external or internal.) some other problem inside the box, ie burred roller bearing jamming it up. Could also possibly be hindered by the clutch not fully releasing, (as it seems to be more of a problem when engine running.) try botany motor works with glenn. williams 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2011 try atf oil(dextron) in gearbox for cold temp, while car is idling put it in gear and hold clutch in for a while to see if there is no leakage from master cylinder, when releasing take note where the clutch is grabbing(normal) possition
b mike w 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2011 I had the same problem after i let a mate drive it. turns out the piece that goes from the bottom of the shift stick that goes to the back of the gearbox had snapped in half. at first the gears were really sloppy then eventually it broke altogether after about a week or so driving with it like that
