bravo 35 Report post Posted May 22, 2005 (edited) Turbo? lmao! My brother was telling me about a tour on a ship he did while overseas (he's an officer on an oil tanker) - they went into this dark room, It had perfectly round walls and nothing in it and the engineer asked if anyone knew where they were. They were standing inside a cylinder on top of number one! (at least thats how the story goes, but there had been a few drinks consumed by then, so maybe a little bit of the story growing in the telling lol) Don't ask me any details other than that, but that is farking cool! Not quite as big as the one pictured though I don't think. Ship engines rev very low - they have a direct drive to the prop in most cases. Some have a gear linkage for reverse, but alot stop the engine and then start it in reverse to go backwards. A prop spinning at a few hundred rpm straight off the engine is enough to power these ships at the speeds they do (between 5 and 15 knots for coastal, and more for offshore) Don't know all the specifics, but I'll ask my bro next time he's on shore leave cos I'm going by memory from what he's told me in the past. Guest Spargo Report post Posted May 23, 2005 4.27 hp/L I'm amazed. Amazed that something this inefficient is allowed to be. Even aircraft are more miserly.
CaM 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2005 I'm not sure the key is out and out horsepower, rather the efficiency.... moreso measuredin thermal efficiency (50% with this engine as opposed to 25-30% for most other engines) rules mega
