wolfman 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2011 2002 530i Touring I have read many of the other topics on bimmersport about E39s so won't ask all the 'what to watch out for' questions again (tho feel free to post them anyway ) but was more wondering if anyone has had dealings with the car yard (CAR CITY AUTOS ) either positive or negative experiences, reason being is we are considering flying up from Palmy to look at this car plus a couple others so help us make our mind up about whether to make the trip over the bridge to see this one. allan 295 Report post Posted October 5, 2011 (edited) http://www.bimmersport.co.nz/forums/index.php?showtopic=7327 have a read of this it may help. At those K's it is getting close to a number of items showing signs of wear. The 5 series has taken a big knock down in price for some reason with that in mind the asking price for this is a bit on the high side imo. Would ask some of the Auckland Guys to help out and see if any of them would have a look for you might save on airfares. Best of luck in your search no matter what the outcome. Are you set on a touring as I have a sedan for sale. Edited October 5, 2011 by allan

Are you set on a touring as I have a sedan for sale. Thanks for the info. Yeah we are looking at touring as it suits family lifestyle better (dog, kids and their assorted gear). I did think the price was high though the other similar but cheaper 530i's have all seemed to have been sold that I had been watching, bar one in Christchurch with even higher mileage and same price. There was this one: Turners 530i which price wise is a lot better (but obviously is still going to need some maint/ work) but as it didnt sell at last weeks auction, and in fact has been floating round since July, maybe there is something else up with it. sp8s 1 Report post Posted October 5, 2011 Is that one at Turners a fresh import. Seems so with no plates plus they say "on road costs" in the ad
briancol 3 Report post Posted October 6, 2011 (edited) I don't know where some members here get their knowlege about car prices? As a dealer for over thirty years, I can tell you that the car at Car City is not overpriced, and remember that the price is always negotiable. My suggestion to you is to contact the dealership and ask them to take the car to a specialist BMW service center for a pre purchase inspection. You will have to arrange and pay for the inspection (usually $125-150). You then use the results of that inspection to negotiate the purchase price. I don't know who owns Car City now, but the original owner was a friend of mine and was very reputable. Edited October 6, 2011 by C0SM0S
lidistick 70 Report post Posted October 6, 2011 Great car to have. Get one that has been looked after. Standard things to watch for are radiators, cup holders, tail gate rust (was missed during inspection). The m54 engine is reliable n torquey. Happy hunting. wolfman 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2011 The radiator was one thing I had read about in particular that rears its head at around this age - does anyone know the approximate (ballpark) cost to replace a 5 series radiator (inc labour, not just the part)? lidistick 70 Report post Posted October 6, 2011 Get a warranty.
wolfman 0 Report post Posted October 12, 2011 (edited) Thanks for the advice... this one still not complied so now looking at the one at Turners, currently getting a pre-purchase check done. Can get 3 year comprehensive warranty for $1400 so figure thats a good safety net, and with the money I'll hopefully save can afford to spend on fixing minor issues, some new rubber if need be, full service etc. Course all depends if I get it at auction - it loosk to have passed in last time, if I could get it for around 12K if could be a steal... or the beginning of an expensive nightmare. EDIT: And the pre-purchase advised it was a complete lemon, so back to square one. Edited October 13, 2011 by Wolfman
jordyboy2 0 Report post Posted October 13, 2011 I agree with cosmos, I Bought my last car from them (Audi A3) and should have taken it to an audi service centre to get it checked out, the transmission failed within 3 weeks, have just been through the MVDT trying to get my cash back. So, get it checked by a BMW specialist Btw the owner is stevo lubovollich - something like that There are 2 companies trading from that address, raynmac holdings and kazbar holdings, kazbar was thew one I delt with. This ones popped up - bit of a looker. 525i M-Sport 'Individual' I had been mainly watching out for 528 and 530 and I know some members prefer the extra grunt of the bigger engines - is there anything tho in particular to watch out for with the 2.5 litre engines or are they just as good reliability wise (or just as bad depending on your viewpoint) I have to say just from the photos the paint condition looks really good, but obviously its the mechanical parts that are the really important thing. Smac01 12 Report post Posted October 18, 2011 I'd been waiting for this to arrive for a month or so. Looks like a well spec'd wagon to be honest, but unfortunately the dealer isn't very good at communication! Definitely worth a look.

Nothing at all wrong with the 2.5 engine - still the same basis of the 3.0l. Expect comparable reliabilty. At that milage is getting close to the usual cooling system issues of E39's. Not quite the punch/torque of the 3.0 but still no slug & I find quite ok

dereklau007 1 Report post Posted October 20, 2011 Hi Miles, I bought my 530i from them very recently. I can not recommend taking it to a BMW specialist enough because there were quite a few things that needed fixing on my car. I had negotiated that if there were any issues they would get fixed otherwise the deal was off. So good company to deal with in my experience and could not be happier with my car. Just as a note I took it to Jerry Clayton in Takapuna and they did a comprehensive check. What I would say is (if you can that is) be present for the pre-purchase inspection. Cheers, Derek

wolfman 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2011 Thanks for the extra input guys - I 'll say I am progressing with the investigations of this car and am close to a purchase. I did mention in passing to the dealer (Andrew) that I'd heard some good things about his dealership and he was quite chuffed.
