Generally speaking needs an overhaul around 100-130k mark depending on how old it is. How much coolant are you talking about? and have you found any visiable signs of a leak, wet carpet, green crusty stuff on anything. The expansion tanks can crack on the e39's also a faulty cap to name a couple of things. But as Stated get it looked at pronto nothing BMW likes getting hot with out it putting a hole in your pocket.
