e34 - 540 or 535is - any info on these two

I am looking for a solid e34 for the wife (yeah right).

The 540 seems to be a members car (fully loaded but not a factory ms?)but anyone know about this one?

What are the maintenance regimes and gas mileage like using either as a daily. Are the v8's easy to work on or best left to a professional? We are currently using a volvo 850 which is surprisingly economical for a 2.4 Turbo.

535is will do about 12L per 100km on average

10ish on a trip and 14-15 if you push it all the time

540i are better on a trip due to there tall gearing but can upwards to 16L per 100km if you push it

both are not to bad to matain.

540i auto will fail at some stage

535i 5spd are pretty bullit prof .

both are heavy cars but well made (probably best bmw made)

also consider E28 535ia , lighter ,more ecnomy more power and torque than e34 535i and simply
