Cain's 540i 6spd - after I attacked it.

Recommended Posts

:bounce: I have picked up my new gear-knob. It's all that and fries. Took it to NZ Autocar and fitted it. So one less thing that will look worn for the photoshoot.

What's it worth, well you'd need to have a great 325 Motorsport and a substantial amount of cash to make me part with it.

That's not a no however.

Gus, you can get your hands on my knob now. ;) You know you want to.

He has an SA 325iS Evo I, not a motorsport. 6 1/2 dozen or the other really, two great cars, both serving a different purpose.

OK, NZ Autocar have given my car back in one piece! It will be in next months issue as a Second Gear article. Out in 2 weeks, I'm told.

It was strapped into their VBox.

Figures recorded:

0-100 6.9 sec

80-120 4.8 sec

100-0 30.8m :bounce: (4 fastest stoppie they have ever tested!) and I think the fastest saloon

That's all I know for now.

Holeee crap, it stops quicker than an E36 M3 CP with the optional AP Racing 4pots!

What are you running brake wise Cain? Are they 4pots?

Pretty standard brake package really. 540 calipers (whatever was fitted new), Mintex 1166 pads. BMW front rotors, Brembo slotted rear rotors. Standard brake lines too.

I would put more of it down to decent tyres. They make all the difference.

They have just found the 1st car to go under 30m, suprisingly (for me anyway), it's a Chrysler Crossfire. Tested today.

I'm pretty happy for a 10 year old car that weighs 1680kg (spec).

For comparison

Porsche 911 Turbo 34.50m

Ferrari 360 F1 34.51m

V10 M5 34.45m

M3 CSL 32.55m

Audi RS6 Avant 35.52m

Lotus Exige 33.60m (something half the weight)

HSV Clubsport R8 35.22m

:rambo: those new cars.

From BMW M Registry

What size brakes does the M540i have?

The M540i's braking system is the same as that of all E34 M5s built as of May 1994, its four-wheel vented discs measuring 13.6-inches (front) and 12.8-inches (rear) in diameter. In addition, the front rotors incorporate two-piece “floating” calipers. This is the only factory BMW application of these rotors ever offered in North America.

13.6" is 345 mm, 12.8" is 325mm

Mighty impressive. Did they get the ABS kicking in? I would guess that the way ABS triggered could make a big difference to stopping distance.

Ah, yes, but my rotors are 302mm Front and 300mm Rear.

Imagine if I had the big brake package.

wow, those are some awesome braking distances.

Autocar are never that quick with acceleration tests (quicker than Wheels, anyone would be), but I'm guessing they were extra careful with a private car?

Thanks again guys.

Kyle promises me that he launched the way I told him. 2800rpm and kick your foot off it. They only did 2 runs. I think with the new tyres I might be able to launch at 3000rpm. I'll find out when Nath brings his baby down.

I was hoping the 80-120 time would be better. But I'm picking that they had to change into 3rd at the last minute.

RR Phantom 4.30 sec

Lambo Diablo 4.40 sec

Audi A8 4.50 sec

Lexus LS430 4.22 sec

Looking forward to watching the Intermarque's tomorrow.

Emma, could you have a lash at photoshopping my plates as Euro's. Thanks.

Yup - just went down to get my copy as well :)

Great article Cain, excellent pictures. "Was used to trail a track monster" haha I though it was the track monster!

Estimated value 20-25k.. I though it would have been more?

For those of you who haven't seen it, i've scanned and resized it, so will upload it in a moment, hopefully not killing too much of Andy's bandwidth.
