E34 ZF Auto Fluid Change

Recommended Posts

Going to change this today, finally. have been trying to find procedures on the internet, but as the USA E34's didn't have this transmission there's very little information, the M3 they have is similar that I can tell. ZF 5HP-18.

Can't seem to see how you'd refill it? Is it pressure filled or something? could be completely out of my league in replacing.

Will be using a hoist and have a fluid syringe.

they are a real bitch to do. the fill tube is about a meter or so long and goes right up and over the trans. poke the syringe with a long tube (i used fuel line) on it into that larger plug and keep pumping it. DONT get the oil that is in Repcos catalouge, it is wrong. the only brand i could find (without a lot of effort mind) was penrite or penith or whatever it is brand. i still have the empty bottle in the shed if you want to know the exact type

I've used Fuchs Titan ATF 6000 SL Full Synthetic.

I'm going to check it in the morning, think it's a little low.

Did filter+gasket Oil wasn't smelly or burned, just old.

nothing that would scream out failure in the magnets, doubt it's ever been opened. had to make a "special" tool.
