E46 M3 with intermittent starting problem

My 2003 E46 M3 has an intermittent starting problem.

when i insert the key all the lights come on but when i turn it to start it, the car wont start and there seems to be some kind of fan noise.

as mentioned above this intermittent, sometimes the car starts straight away, sometime 2nd try, sometime after few trys..

it all started about 4 days ago, and fortunately i managed to get the car started everytime so far, but how long will it lasts....

any ideas?

If in Auckland bring it in for a scan. Have E46 M3`s of my own so we are pretty familiar with any issues.

Could be a simple key initialisation issue ... try this first:

Might also just be a dead key, as the battery do wear out in these and technically you can't change them out (although realistically you could, but you'd have to heat the plastic up first to open them up and change the battery inside and then glue the key back together)
