Help e30 replacement water pump in chch

Recommended Posts

Hi, I would appreciate some advice.

I have an 87 320i and believe the water pump has died. The fan is wobbling all over the show and hitting the back of the radiator, and is leaking large amounts of water. I would like any advice on this possible and if anyone knows what a new pump would cost, and their availability?

Is it a involved job? I have removed the radiator and now need a 32mm wrench or a fan clutch tool to remove the fan. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Nick.

32mm spanners are available at any shop that sells tools... I got mine from Supercheap auto for $20

USUALLY if you don't remove the belts a good whack with your hands will get it off - remember lefty tighty righty loosy. (opposite)

Pumps are easy to get.

But the amount of work it is to change it you might as well do the Timing belt, tensioner, camshaft and front crank seals at the same time... as you have to take off all those parts, and you do detention a spring that is part of the timing belt tensioner.

^ You drop the spring yes, but the spring only sets the initial tension then is bolted in place, so it won't move if the spring comes out.

But agree with the amount of stuff you take out you should probably do the timing belt and tensioner at a minimum "while your there".

Thanks for the advice. I have a pump coming from aucks and have removed the old one now. I prob won't bother with the tensioner and timing belt etc as I managed to remove the pump without touching that. It would be great to do that work but funds and time are not with me at the moment.

I have flushed the system and will replace the pump tomorrow so will let ya know how I get on. Thanks again.

Nick
