Importing into NZ

Howdy all, could someone give me a very brief rundown of what is required to import a car (from Australia- if this makes any difference) into NZ.

Minimum age, side intrusion bars etc?

Afaik you can import a car after owning it for 6?months or more as a private import and get around most of the regs pertaining to commercially imported vehicles,like age ,safty ratings blah blah blah.

Ah, excellent, I'm a Kiwi but living in Australia, I will (if I get it) have the car for more than 6 months. Then I would like to send it home (NZ) when I move elsewhere.

So, after scanning through that link quickly, if I'm trying to import a 1987 LHD M3 from Australia I'm sh*t out of luck?

Would it be worth importing it and then re-registering it once its 20 years of age as a classic car.

If I get it I'll be keeping it in Australia until 2007 anyway. It all comes down to the bank now. I'll be posting a few pictures if I do.
